Ester Expósito and Mar Coll Revitalize Spanish Classic 'La Regenta'

In a bold move set to reshape the landscape of Spanish cinema, Netflix has announced the adaptation of Clarín’s literary classic, “La Regenta.” The much-anticipated feature film, which began production on October 23, brings together notable talent: “Elite” star Ester Expósito and acclaimed filmmaker Mar Coll, winner of the Locarno Film Festival. Produced by María Zamora under Elastica Films—known for hits like “Alcarràs” and “Romería”—this adaptation is poised to be one of the defining films of 2027.

Reviving a Classic: The Significance of “La Regenta”

“La Regenta” was initially met with criticism but is now celebrated as a Spanish masterpiece, second only to “Don Quixote.” In a recent statement, British author Julian Barnes referred to it as one of the great 19th-century novels, alongside revered works like “Madame Bovary” and “Anna Karenina.” This contemporary adaptation aims to reinterpret the narrative through a “fresh female perspective,” allowing new audiences to connect with its timeless themes.

A Glimpse into the Story

Published between 1884 and 1885, the plot revolves around Ana Ozores, a young and beautiful woman trapped in a loveless marriage to Victor Quintanar, a man nearly twice her age and a former magistrate of the oppressive provincial town of Vetusta. As she grapples with her unfulfilling existence, Ana becomes the object of desire for two prominent men: Magistral Fermín de Pas, her sensual confessor, and the charming Don Juan, Álvaro Mejías. Netflix describes the adaptation as a narrative where “what begins as a private crisis becomes a silent struggle between desire, faith, and social power, where Ana’s every move is watched, judged, and manipulated by those around her.”

Star-Studded Cast and Creative Team

In addition to Ester Expósito, the film boasts a talented cast, including International Emmy Award winner Oriol Pla as Magistral Fermín de Pas, Vito Sanz as Victor Quintanar, and Borja Luna as Álvaro Mejías. The ensemble is enhanced by the performances of Clara Ingold, Carlos González, Ana Torrent, Itsaso Arana, and Gonzalo de Castro, all contributing to this ambitious project.

The screenplay has been crafted by Mar Coll, along with Anna R. Costa—known for her work on “Madrid Arde”—and Diego Vega, one of Peru’s notable filmmakers. Mar Coll expressed her vision for the film, stating, “Clarín’s novel is so rich that dozens of different adaptations can be made from it. I have approached the material with a radically personal perspective, focusing on the loneliness and heartbreak of this regent’s wife, who tirelessly longs to give meaning to her life—a luminous character in a predatory universe.”

María Zamora’s Influence and Legacy

María Zamora, the film’s producer, has made significant contributions to the Spanish film industry. With her production companies recognized for several prestigious awards, including the San Sebastián Golden Shell and Cannes Directors’ Fortnight, Zamora champions a new generation of Spanish filmmakers, particularly women, shaping the narrative of contemporary cinema on an international scale.

As Netflix continues to delve into significant literary works, “La Regenta” stands out as an exciting adaptation that promises to breathe new life into a revered classic while exploring themes that resonate deeply with modern audiences.
