EFM, Frontières Set for Exciting Genre Expansion in 2026

The collaboration between Berlin’s European Film Market (EFM) and Frontières is set to redefine the genre film landscape with a new initiative launching in 2026. This EFM Frontières Focus aims to introduce a fresh genre concentration, creating a pivotal platform for the presentation and promotion of innovative genre films. By fostering connections between filmmakers and industry professionals, this initiative seeks to challenge traditional perceptions and elevates the artistry and diversity within genre cinema.

Expanding Horizons: A New Platform for Genre Films

Set to debut next February, the EFM Frontières Focus will showcase five exceptional genre titles. The selection will encompass a wide range of films, from psychological thrillers and horror to sci-fi, fantasy, and hybrid forms. These titles, either as works in progress or in production, will be presented to secure completion finance and connect with sales agents, distributors, and festival programmers. The Berlin Film Festival emphasized its commitment to shattering outdated notions and highlighting the creativity within the genre sector.

Unique Opportunities for Industry Professionals

Filmmakers will have the chance to pitch their projects directly to an industry audience, supported by screenings of selected clips. This engagement will be further enhanced by exclusive networking events that are specifically designed for the genre community. These events aim to offer unique opportunities for collaboration and business in a dynamic and focused environment, as noted by the Berlin Film Festival.

Industry Leaders Celebrate Creative Collaboration

Tanja Meissner, director of Berlinale Pro, remarked, “Genre filmmaking is enjoying a remarkable surge in creativity and visibility, attracting leading creative voices, top talent, and bigger budgets.” She believes that the EFM Frontières Focus will spotlight these developments, creating new opportunities for creators and industry professionals. This collaboration is seen as a natural extension of their commitment to bold storytelling and innovation.

Annick Mahnert from Frontières echoed the sentiment, praising her team’s history of championing bold and visionary projects. She expressed excitement about partnering with EFM, stating it would create “a dynamic space for films in production and post-production to find sales and distribution opportunities.”

A Growing Global Trend

Frontières is not new to success, managing platforms like the Cannes Frontières Platform and the Co-Production Market in Montreal. These platforms reflect the worldwide embrace of genre films, a trend noticeable even at traditionally arthouse-centric events like Switzerland’s Locarno Festival. Emerging directors are increasingly using fantasy or dystopian settings to explore complex concepts and social issues, indicating a shift in narrative techniques.

In Locarno, Berlin Festival Director Tricia Tuttle pointed out the widening gap between commercial and festival films as a major industry challenge. However, the EFM Frontières Focus is poised as a strategic move to bridge this gap, showcasing genre films’ capacity to expand in both budget and artistic ambition while gaining broader audience acceptance.
