Eddie Murphy has long been a standout in Hollywood, renowned for his comedic genius and memorable performances. One film frequently mentioned in discussions about his career is “Norbit,” a 2007 comedy that Murphy staunchly defends. Despite theories suggesting that “Norbit” may have cost him the Oscar for his role in “Dreamgirls” at the 79th Academy Awards, Murphy remains unwavering, insisting the film is humorous and far from the disaster it’s often painted as.
The Intersection of ‘Norbit’ and ‘Dreamgirls’
Eddie Murphy’s dual involvement in “Norbit” and “Dreamgirls” sparked significant attention in Hollywood. While “Dreamgirls” showcased Murphy in a serious light, earning him widespread acclaim and an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of soul singer James (Jimmy) “Thunder” Early, “Norbit” told a different story. Released just over a week after his Oscar nod, the comedy faced harsh reviews, which many believe led to Murphy missing out on the coveted award. Instead, Alan Arkin’s performance in “Little Miss Sunshine” clinched the Best Supporting Actor Oscar.
Eddie Murphy’s Staunch Defense of ‘Norbit’
In a recent video interview for Complex’s series “360 With Speedy Morman,” Murphy addressed criticism of “Norbit” head-on. He humorously pointed out that “Pluto Nash” and “Holy Man” deserve more criticism. “I love ‘Norbit,’” Murphy asserted, emphasizing that “Norbit” and “Dreamgirls” are distinct projects. He collaborated with his late brother, Charlie Murphy, on “Norbit” and maintains it’s genuinely funny. “There were articles like, ‘How can he get an Oscar, he did this?’” Murphy remarked, before defending the film’s comedic value.
Razzie Awards and the Redeemer Prize
“Norbit” wasn’t solely greeted with disdain; it dominated the 2007 Razzie Awards, earning worst picture and several other dubious accolades. Murphy humorously reflected on being awarded “worst actor of the decade,” rebutting, “Come on now, shit ain’t that bad.” Despite these setbacks, Murphy’s career saw a resurgence with “Dolemite Is My Name” in 2019. This led to the Razzies awarding him the Razzie Redeemer Award, a nod to his enduring talent and ability to bounce back.
