Dua Lipa paid a heartfelt tribute to Selena in Mexico City, marking a memorable finale to her Radical Optimism world tour. At the Estadio GNP Seguros, Lipa captivated the audience with a poignant cover of “Amor Prohibido,” paying homage to one of Mexico’s most cherished icons. Throughout her tour, Lipa had made it a tradition to perform surprise regional covers, a gesture that resonated deeply with fans, especially on this final stop.
During her extensive journey across continents, Lipa delighted audiences by adapting her performances to reflect the local culture. This included serenading crowds with songs in Spanish and Portuguese during her Latin American shows. Her cover of “Amor Prohibido” showcased her ability to connect with diverse cultures and audiences, adding a personal touch to each performance.
“I chose this song because I feel a very special connection with this artist and with her feeling of belonging to two places at the same time,” Lipa expressed in Spanish. “It’s something I deeply identify with, as I feel I am both Albanian and English, just as she was Mexican and American.” Her words underscored the universal theme of dual identity and resonated with many in attendance.
Reflecting on the challenges of singing in different languages, Lipa admitted, “It’s very nerve-wracking! Especially when we’re performing them in various tongues. My God, my playlist was on loop; all I did was look at the lyrics and listen over and over for intonations and accents.” Her dedication to authenticity in each language highlighted her commitment to delivering meaningful performances worldwide.
From the outset of the Radical Optimism tour in Australia, Lipa embraced the concept of covering songs significant to each location. In the United States, she drew from local talent, while internationally, she favored well-loved classics. Special appearances, such as those by Gwen Stefani, Billie Joe Armstrong, and Lionel Richie, added a layer of excitement to these surprise moments.
“This was my idea,” Lipa noted about her dynamic setlist. Inspired by a successful collaboration at the American Country Music Awards, she proposed to her team, “How fun would it be if every night we do a different song?” The ambitious endeavor paid off, enriching the tour experience for fans and showcasing Lipa’s versatility as an artist.
