Director Ronan Day-Lewis found himself in a unique position while working with his father, the renowned actor Daniel Day-Lewis, on their film “Anemone.” Known for his immersive approach to acting, Daniel Day-Lewis insisted on being addressed by his character’s name, which played a crucial role in maintaining the film’s authenticity. This unconventional method not only shaped the on-set experience but also offered Ronan new insights into his father’s storied career.
Daniel Day-Lewis’s Devotion to Method Acting
Daniel Day-Lewis is legendary for the transformative lengths he goes to for his roles. Whether it was the physical demands of playing Christy Brown in “My Left Foot,” embodying an outdoorsman in “The Last of the Mohicans,” or the meticulous preparation required for “The Phantom Thread,” Day-Lewis’s commitment is unparalleled. This dedication extends to his son Ronan’s project, “Anemone,” where he expected everyone, even Ronan, to call him by his character’s name.
“It was intuitive that everyone called him Ray on set, and I did too,” explained Ronan Day-Lewis about his father’s approach to playing a secretive hermit in the film. “But offset, he was always Dad.”
Ronan Day-Lewis’s Perspective on His Father’s Craft
Growing up, Ronan Day-Lewis witnessed his father’s engrossing work from a distance. “His work was so mysterious to me,” he confessed. “Getting to see that process from this completely different vantage point was pretty thrilling.”
Ronan admitted to the challenges of separating the myth of Daniel Day-Lewis from his role as a parent. Despite this, being involved in the creative process of “Anemone” offered Ronan a deeper appreciation of the artistry involved.
Navigating Family and Filmmaking
Despite having his first feature film star his Oscar-winning father, Ronan Day-Lewis hadn’t initially planned for it. His original project in Germany fell through, and he was faced with the decision to collaborate with Daniel Day-Lewis. “I knew the baggage that would be attached to working with my dad,” Ronan admitted. Concerns over nepotism were brushed aside as Ronan realized the rare opportunity of working with his father couldn’t be missed.
Daniel Day-Lewis was instrumental in the project’s development, proposing they create something based on their interest in sibling relationships. “The archetype of brotherhood and the beauty and tragedy of that archetype felt like something we wanted to explore,” Ronan explained.
The Creation and Themes of “Anemone”
Spanning four years, the father-son duo crafted the script for “Anemone,” a film centered on two estranged brothers, played by Daniel Day-Lewis and Sean Bean, who confront a family crisis. The script required painstaking effort and careful distance, which allowed them to refine their vision incrementally.
“It’s a story about withholding information,” shared Ronan Day-Lewis. The narrative unfolds deliberately, building tension until revelations burst forth, in keeping with the film’s moody, introspective tone.
“Anemone” showcases not only the profound talent of Daniel Day-Lewis as Ray but also the emerging voice of Ronan Day-Lewis as a director, melding family ties with cinematic storytelling.
