Park Chan-wook, celebrated director of “Oldboy” and “The Handmaiden,” has unveiled his latest film “No Other Choice,” which has been two decades in the making. This dark comedy follows a middle-aged man, played by “Squid Game” star Lee Byung-hun, who resorts to extreme measures after losing his long-term job. The director reveals that financial constraints were the primary reason for the prolonged journey from concept to screen.
The Journey Behind “No Other Choice”
Adapted from Donald E. Westlake’s 1997 novel “The Ax,” “No Other Choice” tells a story that resonates deeply with modern fears about employment and economic security. At the Venice Film Festival press conference, Park Chan-wook noted, “We all harbor that deep fear of employment and security.” This universal theme kept the momentum for the film alive over 20 years, as audiences found the story ever-relevant.
The Financial Hurdle
Known for his unique style in films like “Sympathy for Lady Vengeance” and “Thirst,” Park is no stranger to the complexities of filmmaking. After a lengthy hiatus from the Venice competition, he candidly remarked, “There’s a very short answer, one word in fact: money.” The director insisted on a budget that met his creative vision, which resulted in the long delay. However, this patience allowed him to assemble an incredible cast.
A Star-Studded Cast
The impressive ensemble includes well-known actors such as Son Ye-jin, Lee Sung-min, and Yoo Yeon-seok. Lee Byung-hun, who leads the cast, expressed his admiration for Park: “Any Korean actor would be happy to jump on the opportunity without second thought.” He described the film as one of Park’s “most commercial films,” a testament to the director’s meticulous approach and vision.
Park’s Future Outlook
When asked about potential career shifts if the film industry changes, Park expressed confidence in cinema’s future. “I do not think the format of art as film is going to shrink,” he stated, and revealed his willingness to create films even on a smartphone if necessary. His dedication to the craft remains undeterred by industry hurdles.
Despite recent controversies, including allegations of violating Writers Guild of America rules, Park remains focused on his artistic endeavors. He chose not to appeal the guild’s decision, prioritizing the completion of “No Other Choice.” His collaborator, Don McKellar, criticized the guild’s actions as “intentionally undemocratic,” showing support for Park amidst the turmoil.
Park Chan-wook’s perseverance in bringing “No Other Choice” to life reflects his commitment to storytelling and the challenges filmmakers face in realizing their vision. As audiences eagerly anticipate its release, the film stands as a testament to Park’s enduring creative spirit.
