Christopher Nolan’s highly-anticipated film adaptation of Homer’s epic poem, “The Odyssey,” is set to make its digital debut. The film will be available for rent and purchase starting November 17, following its successful theatrical release on July 17. Fans can also look forward to the film’s arrival on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray on the same day.
Extended Theatrical Window and Success
The digital launch comes four months after Nolan’s nearly three-hour epic premiered exclusively in theaters, marking a notably extended theatrical window compared to typical major studio releases. This strategy mirrors that of Nolan’s earlier film, “Oppenheimer,” which enjoyed 123 days of theatrical exclusivity before becoming available on premium video-on-demand and physical media in November 2023.
Box Office Achievements
“The Odyssey” has grossed approximately $1.35 billion worldwide, making it Nolan’s highest-grossing film to date and the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time, surpassing “Deadpool & Wolverine.” Domestically, it has earned over $500 million, and its run in IMAX has generated a staggering $257 million in ticket sales, establishing it as IMAX’s highest-grossing release ever.
Cast and Critical Reception
Starring Matt Damon as Odysseus, the film follows the Greek king’s treacherous journey back to Ithaca post-Trojan War. The impressive ensemble cast features Tom Holland as Telemachus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, along with Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, and Charlize Theron.
In his review for Variety, Guy Lodge noted that “There’s nary a dull moment in the director’s typically muscular, temporally complex interpretation.” He added, “But despite a fine, bone-weary turn from Damon as the wandering king of Ithaca, it’s more sensually than emotionally felt.”
