Netflix has revealed plans for a new installment in its Untold sports documentary series, focusing on the shocking tale of Daejon Love, a viral scam artist who deceived women into believing he was an NFL star. The upcoming documentary, titled Untold: Wide Deceiver, promises to delve into the darker aspects of Love’s online persona and the broader implications of his actions.
The Rise and Fall of Daejon Love
At the age of 35, Daejon Love has been charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and wire fraud following his arrest in August. Legal documents reveal that Love, alongside 18-year-old accomplice Taylor Jamie Chan, managed to con millions of dollars from numerous women on dating platforms. By posing as a player for the San Francisco 49ers, Love created an elaborate illusion of a glamorous lifestyle—posting videos of himself in NFL gear, showcasing luxury cars, and living a seemingly extravagant life on social media.
The Deceptive Scheme
Once Love developed what he claimed to be serious relationships with these women, he manipulates them into investing in a fictitious business venture. Acting as his investment adviser, Chan assisted in crafting fake bank documents and investment returns. Victims were often pressured into sending money, convinced they would receive substantial returns. In desperate situations, some were even encouraged to take out personal loans, with promises that they would quickly recoup their expenses.
The Scale of the Fraud
The duo managed to swindle over $1.3 million from at least 26 victims, according to the Department of Justice. However, the FBI believes the actual number of individuals affected may be significantly higher. If convicted, Love faces substantial penalties, including a fine of up to $250,000 and a potential prison sentence of up to 20 years.
What to Expect from the Documentary
Details about the production of Untold: Wide Deceiver are still emerging. Notably, a source close to the project hinted that the documentary will shine a spotlight on the women targeted by Love, offering a nuanced perspective of their experiences. This announcement comes on the heels of Love’s initial appearance in federal court, heightening interest in this gripping tale of deception and betrayal.
