As Eric Saindon of Weta FX explains, “Our live-action plate of Jack Champion was filmed in a shallow pool in New Zealand.” The team used LED screens to reflect the environment onto the water, while the stunt crew, dressed in blue suits, mimicked the movement of sea creatures on set.

Excavators with practical paddles generated the waves, providing a realistic base for CGI overlays. The integration of live-action and computer-generated elements was essential, with James Cameron using real-time compositing tools to visualize the final product. Bringing the Ilu to Life

The ilu, a majestic sea creature ridden by the Na’vi, required complex visual effects to come alive. Saindon elaborates, “Rotoscoping was used to extract Jack Champion and all water interactions from the plate.” This enabled the creation of a realistic lower half for the actor, merged with digital underwater elements. The team ensured that every interaction with water appeared genuine, using depth-based haze and accurate fields of view to enhance realism.

The Power of the Tulkun Council Scene

The Tulkun, massive whale-like creatures, were another highlight of “Avatar: Fire and Ash.” Their ascent was animated through careful simulations. “As the Tulkun breaks the surface and displaces water, the resulting volume is coupled into the simulation,” says Saindon. This process involved calculating the momentum and displacement of water, achieving an awe-inspiring spectacle as these giants emerged.

The simulations extended to detailing water shedding from the Tulkun, creating splashes and mist accurately representing physical reactions in natural environments. Atmospheric simulations and comprehensive rendering added depth and realism, providing audiences with an immersive experience.
