The climactic sequence culminates in an epic battle by a Louisiana lake, crafted with precision by the film’s prosthetic makeup designer, Michael Fontaine.
For the unfolding drama in this crucial scene, Fontaine engineered a fiberglass plate with magnets to create a believable impact when Sammie’s guitar smashes over Remmick’s head. “We have this plate on his head. It’s hidden by prosthetics and wigs, so it looks like it’s just his head,” explains Fontaine. The ingenious setup included tubing that pumped smoke and blood, ensuring authenticity.
Transforming Characters with Details
Creating the eerie yet captivating look for Remmick involved intricate work. O’Connell donned long, fake fingers, restricting his hand use to maintain the character’s otherworldly essence. Massive dentures transformed his visage, coupled with special contact lenses to finalize the sinister transformation.
The elaborate makeup further enhanced the character’s terrifying presence. His initial appearance, scarred with burns and blood sores, took an impressive six hours to perfect, showcasing the dedication to realistic character design in “Sinners.”

Michael B. Jordan’s portrayal of the dual role in “Sinners,” as Stack and his twin Smoke, highlighted the fusion of vampiric elements with bold 1990s hip-hop fashion. Fontaine designed exquisite 14-karat gold grills for Jordan. “His gold grills turn into a point, as if the fang had the ability to almost bend the gold in his mouth,” Fontaine elaborates.
Bringing further depth to the character, the bite mark prosthetic on Jordan’s neck demanded hours each day to apply. This intricate piece, complete with blood-pumping tubing, added another layer of realism to his vampiric persona.
