CJ ENM Debuts First Light StoryHouse for Asian Narratives

In a bold move to amplify Asian storytelling on the global stage, Korean entertainment powerhouse CJ ENM has unveiled First Light StoryHouse, a new initiative dedicated to championing Asian and Asian American narratives. This venture aims to bridge cultural gaps through compelling stories by partnering with industry titans Miky Lee, Janet Yang, and Dominic Ng.

The Vision Behind First Light StoryHouse

First Light StoryHouse, born out of CJ ENM’s Asian Content Initiative, seeks to identify and nurture authentic Asian and Asian American stories in both film and scripted television. Spearheading this endeavor are three distinguished partners: CJ vice chair Miky Lee, renowned producer Janet Yang, and East West Bank CEO Dominic Ng. Together, they aim to infuse the global market with enriched cultural narratives.

Miky Lee emphasizes, “Recent successes from Asian storytellers have shown the potential and authenticity of their stories. Through this effort, we aim to spotlight these voices, believing in the power of storytelling to bridge cultures.” This initiative will see early investments in development, ensuring projects are ready for major partnerships with studios and streaming platforms.

Unifying Cultural Narratives

Yang, celebrated for her leadership as the first Asian American Academy president, shares her excitement: “In Miky Lee and Dominic Ng, I’ve found kindred spirits — true champions for cross-cultural storytelling. We’ve discussed our aligned interests over many conversations and have decided to create a venture together.” Their united vision is to deliver stories that resonate universally, celebrating diverse Asian experiences both in the U.S. and internationally.

Dominic Ng adds, “This joint effort behind First Light StoryHouse will serve as a powerful connector between the East and West, fostering deeper understanding and expanding opportunities for creative voices.”

Ongoing Success and Future Prospects

As CJ ENM expands its global influence, the launch of First Light StoryHouse marks a significant step in its storytelling journey. The company’s track record includes international hits like Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite,” the first non-English-language film to win Best Picture at the Oscars, and collaborations like “Past Lives,” which garnered accolades at the 2024 Academy Awards.

Upcoming projects for CJ ENM feature exciting titles such as “Bugonia,” directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, and Park Chan-wook’s Venice selection “No Other Choice.” These films showcase CJ ENM’s commitment to quality and innovation in storytelling.

First Light StoryHouse is poised to redefine how audiences engage with Asian stories, strengthening cultural ties and enhancing the global narrative landscape. This new label stands as a testament to the power of storytelling in bridging worldviews and enriching the fabric of global entertainment.
