Christina Applegate has recently provided a candid update regarding her health, revealing she was misdiagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) five years ago. The actress shared her feelings of uncertainty as she embarks on a new journey to identify the true source of her persistent symptoms.
Back to Square One
On the latest episode of her MS-themed podcast, MeSsy, co-hosted with Jamie Lynn Sigler, Applegate discussed her current medical evaluations. She explained, “We’re going into square one, just doing some testing and going one by one of kind of the sister diseases to MS.” Among the conditions she mentioned are rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and Lyme disease—each capable of mimicking MS symptoms.
A Connection to the MS Community
Despite her misdiagnosis, Applegate made it clear she remains deeply connected to the MS community. “Talk about being a fraud. I don’t even have it anymore. Geez,” she joked, but quickly reaffirmed her commitment, stating, “I’ll never leave this community. We made so many lifelong friends, and I care so deeply about everybody that we represent and I represent. I’m still always going to be a part of it in one way or another.”
Reflections on Misdiagnosis
In a previous podcast episode, Applegate expressed her shock and dismay over the misdiagnosis, which she described as a “mindfuck.” She articulated the confusion she now feels, saying, “It’s this weird feeling because I became — you [Sigler] and I, the poster children for MS. And everything I was doing. I had a reason. I had a fucking reason as to why my day sucked every day. And now I don’t have a reason, and it’s very unnerving and it’s very confusing for me.”
Continuing the Fight
A week following her reveal, Applegate reaffirmed her dedication to advocating for those affected by MS. “I’m still going to speak out on your behalf forever and ever. I still feel like part of this community. No matter what, I love you,” she stated passionately, ensuring her supporters that her advocacy will persist.
