Chris Stapleton’s 'Tennessee Whiskey' Achieves Historic Double Diamond Status
In a groundbreaking achievement for the country music genre, Chris Stapleton’s powerful rendition of “Tennessee Whiskey” has become the first country song to achieve a double diamond certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). This milestone underscores the track’s enduring appeal and Stapleton’s remarkable influence in the music industry.

A Historic Double Diamond Certification

Chris Stapleton’s rendition of “Tennessee Whiskey” has achieved an unprecedented double diamond status, marking the first time a country song has reached this level of recognition. The RIAA announced on Monday that the song has surpassed 20 million units sold. This places it alongside other iconic tracks like Bruno Mars‘ “Just The Way You Are” and “Sunflower” by Swae Lee and Post Malone, which have also reached double diamond status.

“Chris Stapleton’s undeniable vocal grit and storytelling have connected deeply — driving chart successes, earning major awards and most importantly, resonating with fans,” said Mitch Glazier, RIAA CEO. He highlighted the song’s record-breaking feat, declaring it a historic moment for Stapleton and the country music industry as a whole.

Origins and Evolution

Originally penned by Dean Dillon and Linda Hargrove in 1980, “Tennessee Whiskey” was first recorded by David Allan Coe in 1981. While it enjoyed modest success then, George Jones later brought it closer to mainstream attention, reaching Number Two on the Hot Country Singles chart.

However, it was Chris Stapleton’s soulful interpretation that truly revitalized the song. Inspired by Etta James’ 1967 track “I’d Rather Go Blind,” Stapleton’s version infused it with a fresh, bluesy energy that captivated audiences worldwide. His 2015 CMA Awards performance with his wife, Morgane, and Justin Timberlake was pivotal, propelling the song to the top of the charts once more.

The Magic Behind the Music

“Tennessee Whiskey” has since become a staple, covered by a diverse array of artists, including T-Pain and Carín Leon. Its crossover appeal has sparked discussions about what makes Stapleton’s version resonate so widely. When asked about its genre-defying reach, Stapleton modestly replied, “I don’t pretend to know how to explain magic or how to use it.”

The song’s enduring popularity and double diamond status not only confirm its timelessness but also highlight Chris Stapleton’s significant contribution to music, cementing his legacy as one of the greats.
