Charli XCX Captures 'Erupcja' Amidst Brat Summer's Transformation

Charli XCX has ventured into new territory with her role in Pete Ohs’ film “Erupcja,” shot during a dynamic time known as Brat Summer. With a cultural buzz surrounding her musical achievements, Charli’s leap into acting marks an intriguing shift in her career. This article delves into her latest endeavor, alongside director Pete Ohs’ creative vision, and the unique circumstances surrounding the filming of “Erupcja” in Poland.

The Birth of “Erupcja” Amidst Brat Summer

Charli XCX found herself shooting “Erupcja” in the midst of Brat Summer, a pivotal period that brought her major recognition, including three Grammy Awards. Director Pete Ohs reflects on their early meetings, noting, “I met her days before ‘Brat’ was released. She knew good things were coming, but I don’t think she knew how good it was going to be.” Charli’s interest in acting was evident even then, marking a time of personal and professional transformation.

A New Role and a New Setting

In “Erupcja,” Charli takes on her first lead role, playing opposite Lena Góra. The film also features Jeremy O. Harris and Agata Trzebuchowska. Ohs describes Charli as being “in a transitional period,” showing eagerness to embrace new experiences. He highlights, “It was new to her, but she was seeking out experiences and opportunities to learn and to grow.” His approach to filmmaking, which thrives on experimentation, matched her aspirations perfectly.

Capturing Charli Amidst the Scenic Polish Landscape

Choosing Poland as the film’s location added a distinct appeal. The storyline follows Bethany (Charli) and her boyfriend Rob (Will Madden) as they navigate unforeseen circumstances in Warsaw. Ohs explains, “If I had done the same pitch and said we were going to shoot in L.A., it would be less interesting to her amongst the chaos that was this huge career milestone.” Despite her busy schedule, Charli made it to Poland, a decision deemed “a miracle” by Ohs.

The modest crew size allowed them to film inconspicuously in Warsaw, blending in as tourists. Local fans, while excited, remained respectful, as Ohs recounts an incident in a restaurant where admirers waited patiently to meet Charli after filming concluded.

A Journey of Love and Filmmaking

Ohs, familiar with Poland through the American Film Festival, was inspired by the country’s charm and the proposal of an “impossible love” story. His affection for Poland grew, and he admits, “I fell in love with Poland – and with someone in Poland.” This deeply personal connection infused the film with authenticity and warmth.

Embracing a style reminiscent of the 1960s French New Wave, Ohs employed a spontaneous and flexible filmmaking method. “It’s not exactly improv, but the rule is that you always say yes,” he explains. This approach brings about unique textures and relationships that defy clear-cut definitions.

With “Erupcja” generating high anticipation, fueled by Charli’s star power, Ohs continues to capture interest in his unique filmmaking style. He comments on the industry’s norms, offering, “Maybe I can show them a way to refill this well of creativity?” His collaboration with stars like Charli XCX and Jeremy O. Harris presents fresh opportunities in storytelling, making “Erupcja” a film to watch.
