Emilia Clarke’s Battle with Brain Aneurysm
Emilia Clarke, celebrated for her role in “Game of Thrones,” has also faced significant health challenges, including a life-threatening brain aneurysm. Clarke first detailed her ordeal in a moving essay for The New Yorker, aptly titled “A Battle for My Life.”
Recalling a harrowing moment at the gym, Clarke described the onset of excruciating headaches. “I reached the toilet, sank to my knees, and proceeded to be violently, voluminously ill,” she wrote. “Meanwhile, the pain—shooting, stabbing, constricting pain—was getting worse. At some level, I knew what was happening: my brain was damaged.”
Following this incident, Clarke was rapidly taken to the hospital for a brain scan. “The diagnosis was quick and ominous: a subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), a life-threatening type of stroke, caused by bleeding into the space surrounding the brain,” explained the Emmy nominee. “I’d had an aneurysm, an arterial rupture.”
Immediate Surgery and Recovery
Emilia underwent immediate surgery to address the aneurysm, which she described as “unbearable.” During recovery, she experienced aphasia, a condition that left her “muttering nonsense.” Thankfully, this symptom vanished within a week, allowing Clarke to be discharged a month after her admission.
Despite overcoming this initial ordeal, a subsequent brain scan in 2013 revealed another alarming issue—a growth had “doubled in size,” necessitating another surgery. Clarke recounted, “When they woke me, I was screaming in pain. The procedure had failed. I had a massive bleed, and the doctors made it plain that my chances of surviving were precarious if they didn’t operate again. This time they needed to access my brain in the old-fashioned way—through my skull.”
A Return to Full Health
Thanks to the dedication of her medical team and her own resilience, Emilia Clarke has made a remarkable recovery. She expressed gratitude for her current well-being, sharing that she’s now “at a hundred per cent.” Through her candid storytelling, Clarke has emerged as a beacon of hope and strength for others facing similar medical battles.
