Acclaimed British actor, writer, and director Calvin Demba, recognized for his role in Netflix‘s hit “Supacell,” is set to captivate audiences once again with his second directorial venture, “The Animals.”
Impressive Cast Ensemble
Demba has assembled a remarkable cast for this project, including George MacKay, known for “Rose of Nevada” and “Sense and Sensibility,” alongside Louisa Harland from “Renegade Nell” and “Derry Girls,” Nathalie Emmanuel of “Game of Thrones” fame, and Eric Kofi Abrefa, who also stars in “Supacell” and “BMF.” “The Animals” is produced by Tuli Litvak, recognized for works like “Beauty Sleep” and “Fairview Park.”
Plot Overview
The film focuses on Miles, portrayed by MacKay, who grapples with feelings of emasculation and emotional disconnection in his relationship with Remona, played by Harland. An unexpected act of heroism during a violent home invasion presents Miles with a chance to reclaim his identity, but as the situation escalates, he must confront the harmful masculine ideals that govern his life.
Demba’s Vision
“I wanted to create a film that offers a satirical view of gender stereotypes and their impact on relationships,” Demba explained. “’The Animals’ delves into the performative aspects of masculinity, humorously critiquing how we navigate modern relationships and the expectations that come with them. The film strikes a balance between dark comedy and grounded realism, reflecting the ongoing discussions around masculinity and its destructive ideals.”

MacKay expressed enthusiasm for the project, noting, “The script and the opportunity to collaborate with Calvin were incredibly appealing. I’ve admired his work and was eager to be a part of his next creation. The freedom and detail he brings to his direction made the process enjoyable.”

Technical Excellence
Filmed on 16mm by Ebba Hult, whose accolades include screenings at Cannes and Telluride, “The Animals” showcases editing by Mdhamiri Á Nkemi and coloring by Jodie Davison, known for her work on “The Revenant.” The film is executive produced by BAFTA winners Mouktar Mohammed and Sheila Nortley, alongside Demba and Harland.
Festival Circuit and Future Plans
Currently, “The Animals” is set to kick off its festival circuit at a prestigious BAFTA and Oscar-qualifying festival, details of which will be disclosed soon. Demba is also in the early stages of development with the BFI to expand the short film into a full-length feature.
