Emilia Clarke’s Battle with a Brain Aneurysm
Emilia Clarke, renowned for her role in Game of Thrones, faced a harrowing medical crisis that she later recounted in a poignant 2019 essay for The New Yorker titled “A Battle for My Life.” In her candid reflection, Clarke describes the terrifying moment when a severe headache struck while she was at the gym, leading to a dramatic health emergency.
Describing her experience, she wrote, “I reached the toilet, sank to my knees, and proceeded to be violently, voluminously ill.” As the pain escalated, she recognized the gravity of her condition: “At some level, I knew what was happening: my brain was damaged.” In urgent need of medical attention, Clarke was rushed to the hospital for a brain scan.
A Life-Threatening Diagnosis
The results were both swift and dire: Clarke had suffered a subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), a severe type of stroke caused by bleeding into the space surrounding the brain resulting from an arterial rupture. She explained, “The diagnosis was quick and ominous: a subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), a life-threatening type of stroke, caused by bleeding into the space surrounding the brain.” Following this alarming diagnosis, she underwent immediate surgery to seal the aneurysm, a procedure that she described as “unbearable.”
Recovery Challenges
As she began to recover, Clarke encountered further challenges, including aphasia, which left her “muttering nonsense.” Fortunately, her symptoms improved quickly, and she noted, “the aphasia passed,” allowing her to leave the hospital roughly a month after her admission. However, her medical journey was far from over.
A Second Surgery
During a follow-up brain scan in 2013, Clarke learned that a growth on her brain had “doubled in size,” necessitating another surgical intervention. She recounted the harrowing experience that followed: “When they woke me, I was screaming in pain. The procedure had failed. I had a massive bleed and the doctors made it plain that my chances of surviving were precarious if they didn’t operate again.” This time, the doctors opted for a more invasive approach, accessing her brain through her skull.
A Triumph of Recovery
Despite the severity of her medical situation, Emilia Clarke ultimately triumphed. Gratefully, she shared, she’s now “at a hundred percent,” reflecting on her journey with resilience and gratitude.
