Bella Thorne is stepping into the spotlight once again, this time as the director and writer of the highly anticipated sequel to Harmony Korine’s 2012 cult classic, “Spring Breakers.” The former Disney star is set to bring her unique vision to the film, promising a fresh take that reflects the changes in culture since the original.
Details on the Sequel
In May 2025, Variety reported exclusively on the sequel, confirming the involvement of a talented cast that includes Grace Van Dien from “Stranger Things,” Ariel Martin from “Zombies 2,” and True Whitaker from “I Love L.A.” While Matthew Bright was initially attached to direct, Thorne revealed during an interview on Alex Cooper’s “Call Her Daddy” podcast that she has taken over the directing duties.
Bella Thorne Takes the Helm
“The producers watched ‘Color Your Hurt,’ which is the movie that I just wrapped, an early cut of it. And they asked me to write something to see if they would like it,” Thorne explained. “And they loved it! And now I’m writing and directing ‘Spring Breakers 2.’”
A New Vision for a New Era
Thorne’s directorial debut, “Color Your Hurt,” is described as a coming-of-age thriller centered on a young gay man seeking acceptance in a hostile community. Production for that film concluded in October, marking a significant milestone in her career.
When discussing how the sequel will differ from the original, Thorne reflected on the context of 2012, saying it was “such an exploitative time and everyone was going through it.” She noted that she and fellow former Disney stars like Miley Cyrus, Zendaya, and Selena Gomez were often compared in terms of who would emerge as the next “bad girl.” “This time, things are different,” she added, noting, “There’s a lot of craziness, there’s a lot of litness. There is so much litness in this movie.”
Returning Collaborators and an Energetic Tone
Thorne’s sequel will see some familiar faces from the original team, including Chris Hanley and Jordan Gertner of Muse Productions. However, Korine will not be involved in the project and has previously expressed a lack of interest in the sequel.
Teasing the film’s energetic vibe, Thorne said, “I don’t want to get in trouble, but what I can say is it is so litty, litty McTitties. From start to finish, it’s lit as fuck. We are having fun. If you want to go to the theater and have fun, you’re going to have fun with this movie, that’s for sure.”
