Fans of cinematic storytelling are eagerly anticipating Megadoc, a making-of documentary directed by Mike Figgis that goes behind the scenes of Francis Ford Coppola’s ambitious project, Megalopolis. This fascinating film provides an insider’s look at Coppola’s creative process, capturing his passion and dedication. Premiering in select cinemas on September 19, Megadoc promises to be an enthralling exploration of filmmaking artistry. With insights from the legendary director and his cast, this documentary offers a rare glimpse into the making of a modern epic.

A Unique Vision Unveiled

“Do you know why I’m doing this movie? I have money, I already have fame, I already have Oscars. What do I get that I want? I want to have fun.” These words from Francis Ford Coppola set the tone for Megadoc, where viewers witness his joy in creating Megalopolis. Director Mike Figgis delivers a “raw, fly-on-the-wall documentary” that highlights Coppola’s decades-long journey with this self-financed passion project.

Behind the Scenes with an All-Star Cast

The documentary features unfiltered interviews with a stellar cast including Adam Driver, Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Laurence Fishburne, and Dustin Hoffman. Renowned director George Lucas also makes an appearance, candidly discussing his friend and colleague: “He’s the opposite of me. I’m a plan-it-out, plot-it along guy and he’s a jump off a cliff guy.” These insights add depth to the understanding of Coppola’s unique creative style.

The Journey to Megadoc

Mike Figgis recounted how his collaboration with Coppola began. After cheekily suggesting he document the making of Megalopolis in Atlanta, Coppola wasted no time in accepting. Figgis quickly received a call inviting him to join the set the following week. This spontaneous collaboration adds another layer of intrigue to the documentary, as it symbolizes the unpredictable nature of Coppola’s filmmaking.

Exciting Screenings and Restorations

In celebration of the documentary’s release, Figgis will travel to New York and L.A. to attend special screenings, including a new 4K restoration of his classic film Leaving Las Vegas, which marks its 30th anniversary. Utopia, in partnership with Lionsgate, will also offer return screenings of Megalopolis, providing audiences with a chance to appreciate the epic on the big screen once more.
