Barunson E&A Joins Forces with Joko Anwar in Horror Collaboration

In a groundbreaking move for the global film industry, Barunson E&A, the acclaimed Korean studio responsible for the Oscar-winning success “Parasite,” has partnered with Indonesian horror maestro Joko Anwar. This exciting collaboration signals a strategic expansion into Southeast Asia, combining Barunson E&A’s expertise with Anwar’s flair for horror and genre films. Under this new two-year agreement, the studio will handle worldwide sales for Anwar’s Come and See Pictures, promising a slate of films that push creative boundaries.

Launching with “Ghost in the Cell”

The first project in this collaboration is the gripping prison horror “Ghost in the Cell,” directed by Joko Anwar. This film explores a chilling scenario where inmates and guards must unite against a terrifying supernatural force. “Ghost in the Cell” is set to make its sales debut at the Toronto International Film Festival, followed by appearances at the Busan Asian Contents and Film Market. Another anticipated title on the slate is “sMothered.”

Expanding Southeast Asian Influence

Barunson E&A’s partnership with Joko Anwar marks a significant step in its ambitions to expand its influence in Southeast Asia. Anwar is celebrated for his supernatural thrillers, such as “Satan’s Slaves,” which achieved remarkable success both locally and internationally. His unique voice in the horror genre has garnered a devoted audience, enhancing the appeal of this collaboration for the Korean studio.

Anwar’s Stellar Journey

Joko Anwar’s reputation blossomed with films like “Impetigore,” showcased at Sundance in 2019 and Indonesia’s entry for the Oscars. His exploration into superhero cinema with “Gundala” at Toronto and his recent Hollywood venture, Amazon MGM’s “The Siege at Thorn High,” further solidified his global standing. Anwar’s partnership with Barunson E&A aligns with his vision of delivering bold, transformative storytelling to a worldwide audience.

Strengthened Indonesian Ties

This collaboration builds on the extensive groundwork laid by Barunson E&A’s chief executive Yoonhee Choi, who has cultivated deep relationships within Indonesia’s dynamic film industry. Her past involvement with Anwar at CJ ENM, notably on films like “Impetigore” and “Satan’s Slaves,” brings invaluable insights to this partnership. Choi emphasized the aims of this alliance to amplify exceptional Indonesian cinema across the globe.

Come and See Pictures, launched by Joko Anwar in 2020 with Tia Hasibuan, will join Barunson E&A’s esteemed network of Indonesian partners, including key players like Visinema Pictures and Imajinari. This venture promises to enrich the cinematic landscape with daring and thought-provoking films that capture audiences worldwide.
