Anna Wintour Agrees 'The Devil Wears Prada' Was Accurate

Anna Wintour has long been linked to the 2006 film The Devil Wears Prada, but her thoughts on the portrayal have remained largely unspoken—until now. In a candid conversation with New Yorker editor David Remnick on a recent episode of The New Yorker Radio Hour podcast, Wintour shared her perspective, revealing that she believed the film offered “a fair shot” at the character comparisons with Meryl Streep’s iconic Miranda Priestly.

Wintour’s Premiere Experience

The outgoing Vogue editor-in-chief recounted her experience attending the film’s premiere, humorously noting her choice to wear Prada without prior knowledge of the plot. “I went to the premiere, wearing Prada, completely having no idea what the film was going to be about,” she told Remnick. The fashion world, she added, was “very sweetly concerned” about how the film might depict her character.

Interpreting the Caricature

In their discussion, Remnick inquired if Wintour felt the portrayal was damaging. She acknowledged the exaggerated nature of the character, describing it as “cartoonish” and further explained, “Yes, a caricature.” Despite this, she expressed appreciation for Meryl Streep’s performance. “First of all, it was Meryl Streep, which, fantastic,” Wintour noted, finding the film “highly enjoyable and very funny.”

Acknowledging the Positives

Wintour further reflected on the film’s impact, sharing a lighthearted exchange with Miuccia Prada about its influence. “Listen, it had a lot of humor to it. It had a lot of wit. It had Meryl Streep. I mean, it was Emily Blunt. I mean, they were all amazing. In the end, I thought it was a fair shot,” Wintour concluded.

Looking Ahead

Over the years, Wintour has been asked about resemblances to Miranda Priestly. Last year, she told the BBC that the assessment of any similarities should be left “for the audience and for the people I work with.” Fans of The Devil Wears Prada will be excited to learn that stars Streep, Hathaway, Blunt, and Stanley Tucci are set to return for a highly anticipated sequel, filmed across New York City, and scheduled for release in May 2026.
