All-Immigrant Cast Revives 'Superbad' with Virtual Table Read Event

A unique virtual table read of the classic comedy “Superbad” is set to feature an all-immigrant cast, with renowned actors George Lopez, Jesse Garcia, and Al Madrigal joining the ensemble. This special event aims to bring a fresh perspective to the beloved film while supporting a meaningful cause. Scheduled for streaming on August 24 at 2 p.m. PT / 5 p.m. ET, the performance can be viewed on the Immigrant Defenders Law Center’s YouTube channel.

Empowering Through Entertainment

The live reading is not just about revisiting a classic; it’s part of a larger mission to raise funds for the Immigrant Defenders Law Center’s (ImmDef) Bond Fund. This initiative assists detained immigrants in securing their release and reuniting with family. The event encourages donations before, during, and after the performance via the livestream and the ImmDef website, making it easy for viewers to contribute.

George Lopez, Jesse Garcia, and Al Madrigal are joined by a stellar lineup including Chris Estrada, Julissa Calderon, and Leo Gonzalez. The event also features Hasan Minhaj, Cobie Smulders, Harvey Guillén, and Melissa Fumero, creating a cast that reflects the rich diversity of immigrant backgrounds.

Creative Minds Behind the Event

Marvin Lemus, co-creator of “Gentefied,” teams up with Gloria Calderón Kellett, known for her work on “One Day at a Time” and “With Love,” to produce this innovative event. Both being children of immigrants, they aim to bring joy and a sense of community while highlighting the crucial role of immigrant advocacy.

“Right now, so much of what fills our feeds is pain, fear, and uncertainty,” Calderón Kellett explained. “Marvin and I wanted to carve out a little space for joy—to laugh together, to feel community, and to remind people that they are seen, valued, and not alone.”

A Community Effort

Lemus emphasizes the importance of spreading the word, declaring, “If you wanna help immigrants, tell everyone you know about this live read! This is going to be the best live read of a teen comedy ever attempted since the pandemic ended.”

Original creators Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and Judd Apatow have expressed their support for this initiative, highlighting its significance in today’s social landscape.

Supporting a Vital Cause

Founded in 2015, ImmDef stands as one of California’s largest nonprofit providers of deportation defense and immigrant legal services, serving over 30,000 individuals annually across Southern California. Their dedication to defending immigrant rights makes this event not only entertaining but also impactful for countless families.

This virtual reenactment of “Superbad” offers a remarkable chance to enjoy a classic film through a new lens, all while contributing to a cause that deeply resonates in today’s world. Don’t miss the opportunity to both laugh and lend a hand.
