Renowned actor Alan Cumming found a sense of renewal by reprising his role as Nightcrawler in the upcoming film “Avengers: Doomsday,” following a challenging experience during the filming of “X2.” Cumming revealed how this latest portrayal helped heal old wounds and provided a fresh perspective on the character, making him truly appreciate the journey.

Rediscovering Nightcrawler

In an interview with People, Alan Cumming expressed his enthusiasm for returning to the role of Nightcrawler, a character he first played in 2003’s “X2.” Cumming described the experience as “really healing,” contrasting sharply with his initial portrayal, which he labeled as “terrible.” Despite his previous struggles, Cumming has always appreciated the impact of the film itself. “I love the film,” he affirmed, reflecting on the positive aspects of his return.

A Difficult Past

Cumming recalled his “miserable” experience working on “X2” with the controversial director Bryan Singer. Though the past was fraught with difficulties, Cumming has openly discussed these issues, emphasizing how they have been entirely different during the production of “Avengers: Doomsday.” The supportive environment and professional atmosphere of the new film were refreshing changes.

A New Experience

Approaching 60, Cumming admitted he never expected to perform superhero stunts at this stage in his life. The filming schedule for “Avengers: Doomsday” was quite accommodating, allowing Cumming to balance commitments with “The Traitors.” He enjoyed the challenges and the camaraderie, mentioning, “Everyone was really nice.” This positive environment helped Cumming embrace the film wholeheartedly.

A Star-Studded Reunion

Cumming isn’t the only familiar face from the X-Men universe to appear in “Avengers: Doomsday.” The film will also feature Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Kelsey Grammer, James Marsden, and Rebecca Romijn. Joining them are several Marvel Cinematic Universe favorites, including Robert Downey Jr., Anthony Mackie, and Tom Hiddleston, promising a captivating ensemble cast.

Fans eagerly anticipate “Avengers: Doomsday,” set for release on December 18, 2026, with its sequel, “Avengers: Secret Wars,” following on December 17, 2027. For Alan Cumming, revisiting Nightcrawler was more than a role; it was a journey of rediscovery and healing.
