AI Extras Could Revolutionize Film Budgets, Suggests Kevin O'Leary

Kevin O’Leary has stirred debate with his recent comments on the use of artificial intelligence in filmmaking. During promotional efforts for A24’s “Marty Supreme,” O’Leary, known for his role on “Shark Tank,” suggested that utilizing AI-generated extras rather than human actors ‘could save millions’ for movies like his own. By advocating for AI’s role in cost reduction, O’Leary is opening discussions about the future landscape of the film industry.

Embracing AI in Film Production

During an interview on “World of Travel: The Podcast,” O’Leary highlighted his interests in AI and how “Marty Supreme” could serve as an example of integrating this technology. He pointed out the high costs associated with employing human extras, suggesting that AI stand-ins would be a cost-effective approach. “Why couldn’t you simply put AI agents in their place? Because they’re not the main actors. They’re only in the story visually,” he commented.

The Tilly Norwood Phenomenon

O’Leary referenced Tilly Norwood, an AI “actress” introduced at the Zurich Summit, who has caught the attention of Hollywood agencies. Despite backlash from SAG-AFTRA, which condemned the use of AI for “jeopardizing performer livelihoods,” O’Leary emphasized AI’s benefits. Erroneously calling her “Tilly Norwell,” he described her as an ideal, tireless performer who could reshape the industry.

AI’s Musical Ventures

O’Leary also mentioned The Velvet Sundown, a virtual band producing AI-generated music. However, he mistakenly referred to them as “Velvet Sunset.” He noted their rising popularity despite being entirely artificial, asserting, “It’s complete BS. They don’t exist. It’s just AI music.” His investment in AI reflects his belief in the unstoppable advancement of technology.

The Future of AI in Cinema

With a significant budget, “Marty Supreme” is A24’s most ambitious project, starring Timothée Chalamet and Gwyneth Paltrow. O’Leary envisions AI transforming roles like that of extras without sacrificing quality, stating, “You can’t tell the difference… You just put 100 Norwell Tillies in there and you’re good.” He is also experimenting with AI to create a digital version of himself, illustrating how rapidly AI models are advancing.

As AI technology evolves, its potential to reshape industries, including film, becomes more evident, posing important questions about the balance between innovation and tradition in storytelling.
