An unexpected incident unfolded during Abbath’s performance at the SaariHelvetti Festival in Tampere, Finland, as the celebrated Norwegian black metal band’s frontman, Abbath Doom Occulta, abruptly left the stage just two minutes into their set.
Onstage Meltdown
The band, known for their signature style and theatrical performances, began with the track To War before things took a downward turn. Abbath’s departure surprised fans, particularly because he appeared without his trademark corpse paint and costume, while his bandmates maintained their typical stage attire.
Health Concerns and Apologies
In the wake of the frontman’s exit, drummer Ukri Suvilehto addressed the crowd, expressing regret for the abrupt interruption. He acknowledged, “Let’s just say that it probably won’t come as a surprise to anyone that our lead singer is struggling with health problems, so we’re very sorry if this gig has been interrupted.” He reassured the audience, stating, “But we, as solid professionals, are prepared for anything, so we’ll see. But thank you and sorry. We have done everything we can.”
A Pattern of Challenges
This incident is not without precedent; the band previously faced an onstage disaster in 2019 when Abbath ended a show in Argentina after only two songs, subsequently canceling an entire South American tour. At that time, health issues were cited, later revealed to be linked to Abbath’s ongoing battle with addiction.
Commitment to Recovery
In light of his struggles, Abbath entered rehab later that year, openly admitting, “It’s no secret that I’ve been battling addiction. I have now come to realise that it’s time to pick a fight with this demon.” By early 2020, he stated that he had been sober for two months and felt “in good shape.”
