Aamir Khan Chooses YouTube Over Streamers for New Film Release

Aamir Khan is transforming the Indian film distribution landscape with a pioneering decision to release his latest film, “Sitaare Zameen Par,” directly on YouTube, bypassing traditional streaming platforms entirely. This strategic move signals a potential paradigm shift in how Bollywood films reach global audiences, relying on YouTube’s extensive reach to democratize content access. Aamir Khan envisions this as a blueprint for his future projects, aiming to reach a broader audience in a more accessible and cost-effective manner.

A New Distribution Model for “Sitaare Zameen Par”

The Bollywood superstar’s decision to release “Sitaare Zameen Par” on YouTube Movies-on-Demand from August 1 is an unprecedented move in post-theatrical distribution. Having earned over $30 million globally at the box office, the film will be available for rent at INR100 ($1.15) in India and in 38 other countries including the U.S., U.K., and Germany, tailored to each market’s pricing dynamics.

Reflecting on his distribution choice, Khan explains, “Roughly 15 years ago, I realized that our most successful films like ‘3 Idiots’ or ‘Dangal’ were only witnessed by 2-3% of the population in theaters. The challenge was reaching the remaining 97-98%.”

A Vision for Democratized Content

As a spiritual follow-up to the 2007 classic “Taare Zameen Par,” the film stars Aamir Khan and Genelia Deshmukh, featuring an ensemble cast of actors with intellectual disabilities. Directed by R.S. Prasanna and written by Divy Nidhi Sharma, it embraces themes of inclusivity, love, and laughter.

Khan’s strategy of utilizing YouTube’s pay-per-view model aims to make films more accessible. “I don’t think subscription models are economically viable for the long term,” he shares. This reflects his belief in the power of single-payment models in an evolving digital landscape.

Leveraging Digital Transformation

The timing of this strategy aligns with significant technological advances in India. Highlighting the rise of digital payments and internet penetration, Khan states, “India is the No. 1 country in electronic payments… Internet penetration today is very strong and getting stronger.”

Gunjan Soni, country managing director of YouTube India, supports this collaboration for its alignment with both Khan’s vision and YouTube’s mission. “Aamir’s vision and the way he drives democratization is really the heart of YouTube’s mission as well,” she notes, emphasizing YouTube’s reach among Indian internet users.

Implications for the Future

This collaboration underscores YouTube’s ambitions in premium content distribution, competing with traditional streaming services. For Khan, this marks the fulfillment of a dream to reach audiences affordably. He envisions this model as a sustainable way for filmmakers to generate revenue, allowing them to reinvest in quality content.

Significantly, YouTube has not provided any advance payment; the venture relies entirely on revenue sharing. Khan sees this as the future for his projects, stating, “I’m hoping that this will be the blueprint for my future slate.”

The potential for this model to support emerging filmmakers is notable. Khan aims to use this distribution method to help young storytellers who lack access to traditional platforms. By offering a stage for quality films to go viral, he hopes to open doors for new talent.

With this bold move, Aamir Khan charting a new course in the film industry, challenging conventional methods and redefining how content can reach viewers in an increasingly digital world. His commitment to innovation and storytelling marks a significant step toward broadening the reach of cinema and enriching audience experiences.
