Gremlins 3 is poised to rejuvenate a beloved 80s franchise with fresh excitement, pending a pivotal go-ahead from Hollywood‘s legendary Steven Spielberg. With Warner Bros. showing strong interest, fans of the mischievous Mogwai may soon have something to celebrate. Actor Zach Galligan, who famously portrayed Billy Peltzer in the original films, recently shared insights about this potentially thrilling development.
Spielberg’s Approval: The Key to Progress
During a Comic-Con Manchester appearance, Gremlins 3 lead Zach Galligan revealed that Warner Bros. is “incredibly interested” in moving forward with the project. However, the script first needs approval from executive producer Steven Spielberg. Galligan remarked, “After 35 years, they’ve come up with a script. Warner Bros. is incredibly interested in doing it, apparently it’s waiting on Mr. Spielberg to read it and approve it.” The statement has piqued interest, suggesting the project could soon gain momentum.
Box Office Success and Series Expansion
Warner Bros.’ renewed interest in reviving classic franchises has been partly fueled by the blockbuster success of Tim Burton’s “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” which earned $452 million globally. Similarly rooted in 80s nostalgia, the original “Gremlins” film was a significant hit, and its sequel developed a devoted following despite its lower box office performance. The ongoing success of the animated series “Secrets of the Mogwai,” in which Galligan voices a recurring guest role, further highlights the franchise’s enduring appeal.
Future Possibilities for the Franchise
According to Warner Bros. Pictures co-chief Pam Abdy, the studio is working with Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment on “developing new entries in the ‘Gremlins’ and ‘Goonies’ franchises.” While no writer or director has been officially attached to Gremlins 3, the prospect of the film joining the ranks of revitalized classics is intriguing. Potsy Ponciroli has already been tapped to write “Goonies 2,” indicating a broader strategic push in nostalgic revivals for Warner Bros.
The original “Gremlins” not only captivated audiences with its unique charm but also left a lasting impact on the film industry, leading to the creation of the PG-13 rating. As Gremlins 3 eagerly awaits Spielberg’s nod, fans can hold onto the hope that this new installment will continue the legacy of its iconic predecessors.
