The Turkish production company Spongeworthy, known for its innovative approach to filmmaking, has unveiled its latest AI project, “A Woman Asleep.” This announcement follows the success of the AI-generated documentary “Post Truth.” The company is set to present their new venture to potential buyers at the European Film Market (EFM) in Berlin. With growing interest in AI-driven narratives, Spongeworthy’s latest film explores themes of alienation and disconnection in the modern age.
‘A Woman Asleep’: Exploring Contemporary Alienation
“A Woman Asleep” draws inspiration from the 1974 French cult film “The Man Who Sleeps,” itself based on Georges Perec’s novel “A Man Asleep.” The film delves into the feeling of isolation in today’s hyper-connected world. Directed by Vikki Bardot, this AI feature continues the studio’s tradition of pushing narrative boundaries.
Directorial Debut of Vikki Bardot
Making her directorial debut, artist and filmmaker Vikki Bardot leads this innovative project. Her previous AI short, “Dreamt by Another,” gained attention across more than 20 festivals and was acquired by Mubi for distribution in Turkey. As a partner at Spongeworthy, Bardot collaborates with Turkish director Alkan Avcıoğlu, who previously co-created “Post Truth.” This documentary explores the intricate relationship between humans and technology and has been showcased at notable events, including the Warsaw Film Festival.
Innovative Storytelling Techniques
The screenplay for “A Woman Asleep” is crafted by the duo of Bardot and Avcıoğlu, offering a narrative that bridges the gap between human and artificial experiences. Utilizing an AI voice clone of Bardot’s own voice for the film’s narration, the project aims to enhance its dreamlike atmosphere. This approach aligns with storytelling methods seen in the works of renowned directors like Alain Resnais and Michelangelo Antonioni.
A New Chapter for AI in Independent Cinema
Bardot emphasizes the overlooked potential of AI tools in independent filmmaking. “The dominant narratives around AI in the media tend to revolve around Hollywood, budgets and click-driven debates,” she notes. Her involvement in discussions about AI filmmaking, including speaking at the Red Sea International Film Festival and delivering a TEDx talk on the subject, highlights her role as a pioneer in the field.
Spongeworthy’s “A Woman Asleep” promises to further the conversation on AI’s role in cinema, offering a fresh perspective on storytelling that resonates with the complexities of modern life.
