In a remarkable moment highlighting the enduring allure of Bollywood, U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer was serenaded with the classic love song “Tujhe Dekha To Ye Jana Sanam” from the iconic film “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge” (DDLJ) during his visit to Yash Raj Studios in Mumbai. This visit not only marked a cultural celebration but also set the stage for a significant announcement: Yash Raj Films plans to resume filming in the U.K. with three major projects starting in 2026, breaking an eight-year lull.
The Significance of DDLJ
“Tujhe Dekha To Ye Jana Sanam” was a fitting choice for the occasion due to the deep-rooted connection between DDLJ and the U.K. The film, celebrated for bridging Indian and British cultures, was extensively filmed in London and other U.K. locales, underscoring its significance in the U.K.-India cultural relationship.
Yash Raj Films CEO Akshaye Widhani emphasized this historic connection. “The U.K. holds a very special place in our hearts, and some of our most iconic films, including Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ), were shot in this beautiful and incredibly hospitable country,” he remarked.
Rekindling Film Production in the U.K.
The announcement of Yash Raj Films’ return to the U.K. includes plans to create over 3,000 jobs and significantly boost the British economy. Starmer, reflecting on the collaborative opportunity, stated, “Bollywood is back in Britain, and it’s bringing jobs, investment, and opportunity, all while showcasing the U.K. as a world-class destination for global filmmaking.” This collaboration aligns with the goals of the U.K.-India Free Trade Agreement.
Prominent Meetings and Future Projects
During his visit, Starmer met with leading figures from the British film industry, including representatives from the British Film Institute and renowned studios such as Pinewood and Elstree. He also met with actress Rani Mukerji, married to Yash Raj Films chair Aditya Chopra, further solidifying the partnership between the U.K. and Indian cinema.
YRF is also producing an English-language stage musical adaptation of DDLJ titled “Come Fall in Love” (CFIL) in the U.K., celebrating the theme of love transcending borders. This project exemplifies the spirit of cultural inclusivity and marks another milestone in the YRF-U.K. partnership.
This visit to India’s renowned studio coincided with the 20th anniversary of Yash Raj Studios, highlighting a renewed era of collaboration that promises to enhance the creative synergy between the U.K. and India in the film industry.
