An exciting development for indie cinema enthusiasts, Italy’s The Open Reel has secured international sales rights to “Little Tragedies,” a compelling Brazilian feature by Daniel Nolasco. Having clinched the Málaga Festival’s WIP Ibero-América Award, this film stands as a testament to the growing recognition of unique voices within the film industry.
A Significant Win at Málaga
“Little Tragedies” triumphed at the Málaga Festival’s industry hub, earning a €5,000 ($5,752) award. Written and directed by Nolasco, the film delves into themes of memory, distance, and queer identity. Set against the backdrop of a personal narrative, it offers a poignant exploration of belonging and nostalgia.
A Personal Journey
The story is rooted in 2011 when Nolasco leaves Catalão, his small Brazilian hometown, for Rio de Janeiro to pursue higher education. As the first among his queer friends to move away, the narrative unfolds a decade later when no one remains in Catalão. This dynamic explores the themes of memory and loss in a place deemed “too good to live in,” revealing underlying tensions.
Production and Collaboration
Produced by Cecília Brito and Nolasco under Brazil’s Rensga Produções, “Little Tragedies” arrived at the Málaga festival in the post-production stage. The team is finalizing sound, color correction, and image compositing. The acquisition by The Open Reel aligns with their dedication to indie auteur films and supporting filmmakers on the global festival stage.
The Vision of Daniel Nolasco
The Open Reel’s CEO, Cosimo Santoro, highlighted their longstanding partnership with Nolasco, stating that “Little Tragedies” combines autobiographical elements with subtle irony. Santoro praised Nolasco’s filmmaking skills and his ability to captivate through compelling storytelling and evocative imagery.
With Nolasco’s previous successes like “Dry Wind,” which premiered at Berlin’s Panorama, the anticipation around “Little Tragedies” is palpable. The film’s rich narrative, coupled with breathtaking visuals, positions it to capture audiences across Europe, North America, and Asia.
As the film inches towards completion, anticipation grows for its release, expected to resonate deeply with international audiences eager to experience Nolasco’s unique cinematic voice.
