Taylor Swift's Launchpad Record Label Faces Another Ownership Shift

Big Machine Records, the iconic label that propelled Taylor Swift to stardom, is undergoing another ownership transition. Scott Borchetta, the label’s founder, has announced his departure from HYBE America, taking the Big Machine Records name with him as he embarks on new entrepreneurial pursuits. This shift marks another significant chapter for the label that first signed Swift in 2005, reflecting ongoing changes within the music industry. Borchetta had sold Big Machine to Ithaca Holdings in 2019 for an estimated $300 million before it was acquired by HYBE in 2021 for $1.05 billion.

A New Era for Big Machine Records

Scott Borchetta’s decision to leave HYBE America while retaining the Big Machine Records brand signals a fresh start for both parties involved. Upon HYBE’s acquisition of Ithaca Holdings in 2021, Borchetta took on the role of CEO for Big Machine Label Group (BMLG). Now, he steps away with plans to further develop the Big Machine brand independently. Despite Borchetta’s departure, HYBE America will continue to control other assets, including the distribution deal and publishing company Big Machine Music. The roster of artists, featuring country stars such as Thomas Rhett and Carly Pearce, remains under HYBE’s management.

The move has left industry insiders eager to learn more about the future leadership of what was BMLG. A new label name and leadership announcement are expected in the coming days, stirring anticipation about who will guide the next chapter of this storied label.

Industry Reactions

Isaac Lee, Chairman and CEO of HYBE America, expressed gratitude for Borchetta’s contributions and his role in shaping the industry’s landscape. “Scott has made a lasting mark on the music industry with his sharp eye for talent and his unique vision,” Lee stated. Acknowledging Borchetta’s entrepreneurial spirit, Lee noted the mutual understanding and support for Borchetta’s independent ventures. Lee also emphasized HYBE America’s ongoing commitment to supporting their artists across various entertainment sectors.

Scott Borchetta shared his appreciation for the partnership with HYBE, highlighting the shared entrepreneurial values and support he received. “Chairman Bang often talks of his fondness for entrepreneurs, and he, Isaac, and the HYBE leadership team have extended that belief with this incredible showing of support,” Borchetta commented, wishing HYBE continued global success.

The Legacy Continues

Founded as a joint venture alongside Toby Keith’s Show Dog Nashville, Big Machine Records swiftly rose to acclaim with its launch of Taylor Swift’s career in 2005. The label became a focal point of the music industry’s attention during Swift’s well-publicized battle with Borchetta and Scooter Braun over her master recordings. Swift successfully regained ownership of her masters from Shamrock Capital in May 2025, marking a resolution to the saga.

As Borchetta embarks on this new chapter, the music industry watches closely, acknowledging that transformations like these are part of the natural evolution of the business. The label that launched Swift is poised to write its next story, carving out its future in a dynamic and ever-changing industry landscape.
