Sony Group Corporation has announced an upward revision to its annual earnings forecast, thanks to remarkable growth in its music division, particularly driven by the recent success of “Demon Slayer.” This surge helped offset weaker performance in gaming and consumer electronics, allowing Sony to enjoy significant profit growth in its most recent quarter.
Robust Quarterly Financial Performance
The Tokyo-based giant reported an operating income of JPY429 billion ($2.78 billion) for the quarter ending September 30, marking a 10% increase from the previous year. The company achieved sales of JPY3.11 trillion ($20.17 billion), up by 5%. Net income attributable to Sony’s shareholders rose by 7% to JPY311.4 billion ($2.02 billion).
Revised Earnings Forecast Amid Music Division Success
Sony has now set its sights on a higher operating income for the fiscal year ending in March 2026, raising its forecast to JPY1.43 trillion ($9.27 billion). This adjustment reflects an 8% increase from its earlier guidance and a 12% rise from the previous year’s results. The strong performance in the music and imaging & sensing solutions segments, along with a lower impact from new U.S. tariffs, contributed to this positive outlook.
Music Division and ‘Demon Slayer’ Impact
One of the key drivers behind Sony’s success is its music division, which saw sales rise 21% to JPY542.4 billion ($3.51 billion). Operating income in this segment jumped 28% to JPY115.4 billion ($749 million), boosted by streaming, publishing, and the phenomenal box office performance of “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle.”
Sony’s Visual Media & Platform division, responsible for anime content through Aniplex, also experienced significant growth. Revenues soared over 70% to JPY105.9 billion ($673 million) with global distribution managed by Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures, propelling global box office revenues and related sales, such as soundtracks and merchandise.
Other Business Segments and Future Plans
The Imaging & Sensing Solutions division recorded a sales increase of 15%, reaching JPY614.6 billion ($3.98 billion), alongside a 50% profit surge. This growth was driven by increased demand and higher prices for its smartphone camera sensors.
Conversely, the Game & Network Services segment grew its revenue by 4% but faced a drop in operating income due to costs associated with “Destiny 2” and capitalized development expenses. Adjusting for these one-time costs, profit would have risen 23%, underscoring underlying strength in software and network services.
While the Pictures division and Entertainment, Technology & Services reported slight declines, Sony remains optimistic, projecting full-year sales of JPY12 trillion ($77.78 billion) with the revised operating income forecast.
In a strategic move effective October 1, Sony completed the spin-off of Sony Financial Group Inc. The financial services arm’s profits will now be accounted for using the equity method from the third quarter onward. With a stabilized foreign exchange rate and continued strategic investments, Sony is set to maintain its momentum into the next fiscal periods.
