Sony Music Thrives as Film Revenues Fall in December Surge

In a mixed financial landscape, Sony Group has announced a significant 22% increase in operating income for the December quarter, highlighting robust growth despite challenges in its entertainment division. The company, a key player in Tokyo‘s tech and entertainment sectors, managed to leverage strong performances in its music and imaging segments, offsetting declines in other areas. This strategic balance has allowed Sony to raise its fiscal year outlook, with promising prospects on the horizon.

Impressive Financial Gains in the December Quarter

For the quarter ending December 31, 2025, Sony posted total sales of JPY3.713 trillion ($24.1 billion), marking a modest 1% increase. Operating income surged by 22% to JPY515.0 billion ($3.3 billion). A contributing factor was a JPY43.9 billion gain from land transferred to Sony Life Insurance Co., linked to its spin-off. Net income rose by 11% to JPY377.3 billion ($2.5 billion).

The company has adjusted its full-year fiscal 2025 forecast, now expecting an 8% rise in operating profit to JPY1.54 trillion and a 3% increase in annual revenue to JPY12.3 trillion. Despite these adjustments, Sony maintained its estimated losses from U.S. tariffs at JPY50 billion.

Sony Pictures Faces Revenue Decline

Sony Pictures Entertainment reported a revenue drop of 11% to JPY353.3 billion ($2.32 billion), with operating income decreasing by 9% to JPY30.9 billion ($197 million). The decline was attributed to the prior year’s boost from the hit film “Venom: The Last Dance” and other licensing revenue.

Strong Performance in Sony’s Music Business

In contrast, Sony’s music segment delivered impressive growth, with revenue climbing 13% to JPY542.4 billion ($3.5 billion) and operating income increasing by 9% to JPY106.4 billion ($690 million). Streaming revenues showed a +5% growth for recorded music and +13% for music publishing year-over-year. This robust performance encompasses Sony Music Entertainment, Sony Music Publishing, and Sony Music Entertainment (Japan).

Mixed Results in Gaming and Technology Segments

Sony’s PlayStation segment recorded a 4% revenue decline to JPY1.613 trillion ($10.5 billion), yet saw a 19% rise in operating income to JPY140.8 billion ($91 million), boosted by favorable exchange rates and increased sales in network services and first-party game titles. The period marked a record of 132 million active users and increased total gameplay hours.

The company’s Entertainment, Technology & Services Segment experienced a 7% revenue fall to JPY658.1 billion ($4.3 billion) due to decreased display sales, with operating income dropping 23% to JPY59.4 billion ($39 million).

In contrast, Sony’s Imaging & Sensing Solutions Segment saw sales increase by 21% to JPY604.3 billion ($3.9 billion), driven by higher demand for mobile image sensors, and operating income surged by 35% to JPY132.0 billion ($857 million).

As previously announced, significant leadership changes are also on the horizon with Kenichiro Yoshida stepping down as CEO on April 1. Hiroki Totoki, the current president, will take on the role, while Yoshida will become executive chairman. These strategic shifts come as Sony looks to leverage its strong foothold and drive further growth across its diverse business segments.
