Sandra Bullock has shared a compelling reason for her recent foray into social media—one that transcends the simple promotion of her upcoming film, “Practical Magic 2.” In a candid discussion on the “SmartLess” podcast (via People), the Oscar-winning actress revealed that she was compelled to join Instagram to combat scammers exploiting her likeness for fraudulent purposes.
Fighting Scams Head-On
During the podcast, Bullock explained the troubling situation she faced. “About a year and a half ago, I had to because there were people that were using my name and likeness to scam money out of people,” she recounted. The impact of these scams was significant enough that her own sister received calls from victims who believed they had been defrauded by Bullock.
“The harm that it was causing, families going ‘We don’t know how to tell this person it’s fake,’ and I would have people call them saying ‘It’s fake, it’s not real,’” she elaborated. Despite her initial reluctance to engage with social media, the ongoing scams forced her hand, leading her to launch her Instagram account in April, where she has since garnered 6 million followers. Although she had hoped that her presence would curb the scams, Bullock noted, “once I did that, it stopped a little bit, but it doesn’t really. It’s just never-ending.”
Prioritizing Safety
By the time Bullock finally joined Instagram, she had been contending with these fraudulent accounts for over a year. In a statement earlier this year, she emphasized, “my family’s safety, as well as the innocent people being taken advantage of, is my deep concern, and there will be a time when I will comment more, but for now our focus is helping law enforcement handle this matter.”
She also cautioned her fans, saying, “Please be aware that I do not participate in any form of social media. Any accounts pretending to be me or anyone associated with me are fake accounts and have been created for financial gain or to exploit people around me.”
Upcoming Projects
As Bullock embarks on her promotional tour for “Practical Magic 2,” it’s important to note that this film marks her first major role since 2022’s “The Lost City” and a smaller part in “Bullet Train.” “Practical Magic 2” is set to be released on September 10 by Warner Bros, and while many may initially assume her social media presence is aimed at generating buzz for the film, it is a thoughtful response to a more serious issue she continues to face.
