Sabrina Carpenter and More Shine at Variety's Hitmakers Brunch

At Variety’s Hitmakers Brunch, an illustrious group of artists gathered to recognize creativity and emotional expression in music. The event honored stars like Sabrina Carpenter, Tate McRae, and BigXthaPlug, showcasing their diverse musical journeys. With heartfelt speeches and a celebration of artistry, this annual gathering in Hollywood spotlighted the significant contributions of these Hitmakers to the world of music.

For those destined to be songwriters, the spark of inspiration often ignites early. This resonated deeply with the artists honored at Variety’s annual Hitmakers Brunch in Hollywood. Sabrina Carpenter, who received the title of Hitmaker of the Year, fondly recalled penning her first song at ten. Similarly, Tyler, the Creator attributed his creative roots to the wild imagination of his seven-year-old self. Meanwhile, Tate McRae began crafting songs in her bedroom at thirteen, and EJAE from Huntr/x started songwriting at ten. The legendary Buddy Guy shared memories of his humble beginnings in rural Louisiana, where a homemade water filter kept him healthy and driven.

Celebrating Music’s Diverse Voices

The ninth Hitmakers gathering coincided with the release of Variety’s annual Hitmakers issue, which highlights the artistic talent behind the year’s top 25 songs. The event emphasized the collaborative spirit of the music industry. Alex Warren, recognized as Hitmakers Breakthrough of the Year, shared his personal journey. He spoke candidly about the challenges he faced after losing his father and how writing his album “You’ll Be Alright, Kid” helped him process his past. His words, “I am enough,” resonated with many in the room.

BigXthaPlug, honored as Hip-Hop Disruptor of the Year, represented the independent spirit. Part of UnitedMasters, he praised independence in the music business. “Thank y’all for recognizing what we’re doing independently—yes independently,” he said, emphasizing the importance of artist ownership.

Defying the Norms

Benny Blanco presented The Marías with the Anti-Hit Hitmakers of the Year award. María Zardoya, co-founder and lead singer, spoke about staying true to their unique sound, thanking Atlantic Records for supporting their artistic integrity. “Emotion has always taken us further than tempo ever could,” she expressed, highlighting the power of authenticity.

The event, led by Variety’s music editor Jem Aswad, also recognized Riot Games for its innovative fusion of music and gaming, awarding them Interactive Music in Media honors.

Honoring Legacy and Inspiration

Esteemed producer Jimmy Jam presented the Producers of the Year award to Jack Antonoff, Mustard, and Sounwave for their work with Kendrick Lamar. Jam underscored the audience’s role in defining hits and Sounwave reflected on the motivational influences he encountered growing up. Mustard shared his journey with Lamar, aspiring to inspire communities that once inspired them.

Elliot Grainge, leading Atlantic Records, was named Executive of the Year. He applauded Atlantic’s artists and team for their efforts in transforming the label. His insight into the role labels play was particularly poignant, noting their push to elevate artists.

Youth and Humanitarian Initiatives

Addison Rae and her team were acknowledged with the Future Is Female award for their collaborative efforts. Fuerza Regida, celebrated as Humanitarians of the Year, emphasized their commitment to community support amid adversity. “This is our dream,” expressed the band’s Jesús Ortiz Paz.

KPop Demon Hunters’ Rei Ami, alongside EJAE and Audrey Nuna, basked in their achievement, with Ami offering humor and gratitude. Rising star Rosé, whose collaboration with Bruno Mars was a hit, acknowledged the overwhelming impact of success and international fame.

Republic Records claimed the title of Label of the Year, responsible for numerous hits. Marleny Reyes attributed their success to the synergy between leaders and artists, calling Republic “an army and a family.”
