In a historic celebration of cinema, Bollywood icon Rekha will grace the Red Sea International Film Festival in Saudi Arabia, marking a pivotal moment for Indian cinematic culture. Attendees are set for a rare treat with the screening of the newly restored 1981 classic, “Umrao Jaan.” This event highlights Rekha’s enduring influence and the timeless appeal of her award-winning performance. As a testament to global cinema’s rich legacy, this screening promises a unique cultural encounter.

Bollywood superstar Rekha is set to attend Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea International Film Festival for a special screening of Muzaffar Ali’s freshly restored film “Umrao Jaan,” which will be shown outside of India for the first time.

The 1981 classic, starring Rekha in her Indian National Film Award-winning performance as a courtesan-poetess in 19th-century Lucknow, has been restored by the National Film Development Corporation-National Film Archive of India under the National Film Heritage Mission.

An Iconic Return with “Umrao Jaan”

The restoration of “Umrao Jaan” stands as a significant achievement, spotlighting the meticulous work done to preserve India’s cinematic history. Rekha’s portrayal in this film has left an indelible mark, and its renewed screening at the Red Sea International Film Festival underscores the film’s enduring legacy and its cultural resonance across borders.

Global Cinema’s Treasures

Muzaffar Ali will join Rekha for the Red Sea screening, which is part of the festival’s Treasures strand. This segment celebrates six classic international and Arab films, underlining their cultural significance. Among these, Alfred Hitchcock’s 1944 psychological thriller “Spellbound,” featuring Ingrid Bergman and Gregory Peck, illustrates the festival’s dedication to the preservation and celebration of global cinema. This event is significant as it includes a film made possible by Martin Scorsese’s Film Foundation.

Rekha’s Emotional Connection

Rekha expressed her deep connection to the role, stating, “’Umrao Jaan’ is intrinsically woven into the very fabric of my soul.” She described the character as a profound reflection of her dreams and emotions, highlighting the role’s lasting impact on her life and career. Her excitement is palpable as this restored version connects with new audiences, offering an opportunity for rediscovery.

She added, “The opportunity for this soulful film to find a new life after 45 years and connect with a fresh audience at the prestigious Red Sea Film Festival is exhilarating and profoundly meaningful. And witnessing an unprecedented moment when a 1981 classic, ‘Umrao Jaan,’ is featured in the festival’s Treasures strand alongside a film by the luminary filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock is not only a blessing but humbling to the core.”

A Celebration of Film Heritage

The fifth edition of the fest will run Dec. 4-13 in Jeddah, on the Red Sea’s eastern shore. This event not only honors Rekha’s legendary career but also emphasizes the importance of preserving and showcasing cinematic masterpieces from around the world. The festival provides a unique platform for films like “Umrao Jaan” to reach and resonate with contemporary audiences, ensuring their stories continue to inspire and captivate.
