Paramount Staff Criticize Leaders Over Stance on Israeli Film Boycott

In a significant move within the entertainment sector, approximately 30 employees at Paramount Skydance have raised concerns over the studio’s response to a boycott of Israeli films. Their grievances are outlined in a letter accusing the company of “aligning” with “genocide in Gaza,” condemning the company’s stance and actions. This situation has sparked a debate on ethics, creativity, and the responsibilities of media companies in politically charged contexts.

Employees Challenge Company Leadership

On September 17, a group of Paramount Skydance employees reached out to CEO David Ellison and other executives with a letter criticizing the studio for its apparent alignment with actions they equate to genocide in Gaza. The anonymous group, known as Paramount Employees of Conscience and Paramount Employees for Human Rights, stated their unwillingness to endanger personal security amid company layoffs, as communicated to Variety. Their message was followed up with a detailed list of demands after initial silence from the company.

Demands for Corporate Action

The employee coalition has proposed several measures, including a call for Paramount to match its $1 million donation to Israeli causes by donating equally to the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund. They urge the company to genuinely fulfill its mission of fostering understanding by producing content that represents diverse narratives, including those of Palestinian and dissenting Jewish voices.

Industry-Wide Reactions

The issue ties into a broader industry context, where Film Workers for Palestine launched a boycott pledge against Israeli film institutions involved with actions deemed unjust towards Palestinians. Paramount’s denouncement of this pledge as stifling individual artists has drawn internal criticism for misrepresenting the boycott’s true focus. Prominent figures like Emma Stone and Joaquin Phoenix have shown public support for the pledge, emphasizing its focus on institutions rather than individuals.

Calls for Reform and Accountability

The letter also highlights alleged hypocrisy in Paramount’s stated mission of promoting understanding while it perceives a tendency to suppress Palestinian stories. Employees point to successful projects like “No Other Land” as neglected opportunities that align with the company’s purported values. In contrast, they criticize the prioritization of content that promotes only Israeli perspectives.

Paramount Employees of Conscience further assert the need for safety assurances for those opposing the leadership’s stance, calling for a commitment to protect employees from retaliation. This situation reflects a broader call within the industry for media institutions to take ethically informed positions and act with accountability.
