Nicholas Britell Crafts Film Score with Felt Piano Magic

Nicholas Britell, renowned for his evocative film scores, has once again captured the essence of storytelling through music in Noah Baumbach’s latest film, “Jay Kelly.” Utilizing unique techniques like the felt piano and analog tape, Britell has crafted a score that serves as a character in its own right, enhancing the emotional depth of the narrative. This article explores how his innovative approach brings the film’s story to life.

The Vision Behind “Jay Kelly”

Director Noah Baumbach envisioned the score for “Jay Kelly” to be more than just background music. He wanted it to be a melodic entity that adds a rich emotional layer to the film. Composer Nicholas Britell found this directive inspiring. “I went home, I read the script, and I started coming up with ideas,” Britell recalls, highlighting his artistic process.

The movie follows movie star Jay Kelly, played by George Clooney, and his manager Ron, portrayed by Adam Sandler, on a life-altering journey through Europe. As the characters grapple with their life’s choices, Britell’s music underscores their personal transformations.

The Felt Piano’s Intimate Soundscape

Brittel introduced audiences to Jay’s world through the intimate tones of a felt piano. This instrument, known for its softer, more textured sound, became central to the “Jay Kelly” score. “The hammers play through the felt, adding a warm and restrained quality,” Britell explains. This choice perfectly complements Jay’s introspective journey, reflecting his internal struggles and growth.

The felt piano’s distinctiveness resonated with Baumbach’s vision, making it the musical representation of Jay’s character.

The Tribute Scene

A significant moment in “Jay Kelly” occurs during an Italian film festival tribute to Jay’s career. Britell created “The Tribute” cue to stand apart from the main score, imbuing it with a commercial sound to mirror how a festival might honor a celebrated actor. “I wanted it to feel like it was made specifically for the tribute,” Britell notes. He delved into a grand orchestral arrangement, distinguishing it from other musical themes in the film.

This scene cleverly intertwines with the score, as Britell blends Jay’s fanfare theme with a reflective piano piece, offering audiences a glimpse into Jay’s introspection triggered by memories.

Experimenting with Memory and Sound

Britell’s innovative spirit led him to explore reverse audio as a means to evoke a sense of memory. Instead of simply playing music backwards, he reconstructed and played it anew, aiming to capture Jay’s internal reflection. “It felt like the emotion we were looking for,” Britell says of the resulting piece.

Further experimentation involved recording the entire score on analog tape. Britell appreciated the authentic and historical sound that analog tape provides, much like the cinematographic choice to shoot on film. “There’s a unique quality to it you just don’t find elsewhere,” he asserts.

Through these creative techniques, Nicholas Britell’s score for “Jay Kelly” not only enhances the storytelling but also stands as a testament to the power of music in cinema. Listen to the score below.
