Legendary Bollywood Actor Dharmendra of 'Sholay' Passes Away at 89

Dharmendra, the iconic Bollywood star known for his legendary roles in films such as “Sholay” and “Phool Aur Patthar,” has died at the age of 89. Revered for his unique blend of rugged charm and natural talent, Dharmendra’s career extended over six transformative decades in Indian cinema. Just weeks before his passing, he was hospitalized in Mumbai due to respiratory issues but was later discharged, leaving behind a legacy that remains unparalleled.

A Cinematic Legend

Renowned as the “He-Man” of Hindi cinema, Dharmendra’s on-screen magnetism captivated audiences from the 1960s onward. With more than 250 films to his name, he was a fixture in Indian cinema, starring in landmark hits like “Sholay,” “Phool Aur Patthar,” “Satyakam,” and “Chupke Chupke.” His roles in “Seeta Aur Geeta,” “Yaadon Ki Baaraat,” “Loafer,” “Blackmail,” and “Jugnu” further solidified his reputation as a versatile actor who could effortlessly shift between drama, comedy, and action.

Early Life and Rise to Stardom

Born on December 8, 1935, in Nasrali, Punjab, Dharmendra’s birth name was either Dharam Singh Deol or Dharmendra Kewal Krishan Deol, depending on varying sources. He relocated to Mumbai after winning a Filmfare magazine talent contest, marking his film debut in 1960 with “Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere.” His ascension to stardom came with the 1966 film “Phool Aur Patthar,” where a notable bare-chested scene earned him the “He-Man” title.

A Versatile Career

Throughout the 1970s, Dharmendra was omnipresent at the box office, captivating audiences with his diverse roles — from the idealistic protagonist in “Satyakam” to his comedic turn in “Chupke Chupke,” and the memorable portrayal of Veeru in “Sholay,” alongside Amitabh Bachchan’s Jai. Between 1978 and 1997, he sustained his prominence with action-packed and ensemble movies, including “The Burning Train” and “Azaad.” Dharmendra also ventured into production with Vijayta Films, which launched his son Sunny Deol in “Betaab.”

Personal Life and Legacy

Dharmendra married Prakash Kaur before entering films, with whom he had four children, including actors Sunny and Bobby Deol. His high-profile partnership with actress Hema Malini, both on and off screen, led to marriage and the birth of their daughters, Esha and Ahana Deol. Despite public scrutiny, their relationship endured over decades.

Beyond acting, Dharmendra entered politics, representing Bikaner in Parliament from 2004 to 2009 under the Bharatiya Janata Party. In later years, he returned to cinema with films like “Apne” and “Yamla Pagla Deewana,” appearing alongside his sons. Honored with the Padma Bhushan and Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award, Dharmendra remained a cherished figure for his humility and generosity.

He leaves behind a family that includes Prakash Kaur, Hema Malini, sons Sunny, Bobby, and Karan Deol, and daughters Esha and Ahana Deol. Reflecting on his legacy, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi remarked, “The passing of Dharmendra Ji marks the end of an era in Indian cinema… My thoughts are with his family, friends, and innumerable fans. Om Shanti.”
