Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn have captured the hearts of many with their enduring relationship, which spans over 43 years. In a recent candid conversation with The Wall Street Journal, the 75-year-old actor opened up about the early days of their romance, recalling how they first met in 1967 while filming “The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band.” Russell reflects on how their playful philosophy, “Let’s have fun until we don’t,” has guided their journey together, fostering a family-oriented life built on love and shared experiences.
Their First Encounter and Reunion
Russell fondly remembers their initial meeting at just 15 years old when he crossed paths with Hawn, then a 21-year-old dancer. “Goldie and I met again in 1983, while working on the film ‘Swing Shift,'” he mentioned. “By then, both of us had been through divorces, and she had two small kids—Oliver and Kate—and I had one, Boston. We hit it off and agreed, ‘Let’s have fun until we don’t.’ It’s been 43 years.”
A Blended Family Life
Throughout their four decades together, Russell and Hawn have successfully blended their families without the need for marriage. They welcomed their son Wyatt in July 1986 and have supported each other in raising their children. Russell highlighted their commitment to family life, emphasizing that despite never formally tying the knot, their bond has thrived through devotion and mutual respect.
Their Home Sweet Homes
Residing in multiple locations, including Los Angeles, Palm Desert, Old Snowmass, Colorado, and New York, Russell shares that his favorite is their log cabin in Old Snowmass. “It’s a large, beautiful log-cabin lodge on a ranch that we moved into a little over 40 years ago,” he shared. Their affinity for log homes seems to be a significant aspect of their shared life, with Russell noting, “I never got that out of my system, starting with the one in Maine.”
The Notion of Marriage
Reflecting on their decision to remain unmarried, Hawn has expressed that their relationship flourishes just as it is. She stated in 2007, “I already feel devoted,” indicating that emotional connection and honesty have sufficed for a strong partnership. Hawn believes that their success in parenting without marriage demonstrates that love and commitment can exist independently of traditional structures. “I like waking up every day and seeing that he is there and knowing that I have a choice. There is really no reason to marry,” she explained.
Creating Lasting Bonds
Hawn’s children, Kate and Oliver Hudson, were only toddlers when Russell entered their lives, and they have openly recognized him as a paternal figure, referring to him as “Pa.” On their podcast, “Sibling Revelry,” Oliver remarked, “I’m the man I am today because of him.” As he reflected on the proposal of adoption from Russell, he noted how the love in their family structure did not necessitate formal titles or legal bonds, emphasizing the profound connection they shared instead.
Oliver also touched on the complexity of family dynamics, recognizing the impact of not having his biological father around. While acknowledging the special love he received from Russell, he admitted, “There was always sort of like, ‘Wow, but there’s that other side.’” The heartfelt sentiments expressed by both Oliver and Russell illustrate the enduring legacy of love and commitment that Hawn and Russell have cultivated over the years, echoing the philosophy of “Let’s have fun until we don’t.”
