Kenny Loggins, renowned for his iconic contributions to movie soundtracks, opens up about the therapeutic journey of making a documentary about his life. The film, aptly titled “Conviction of the Heart,” delves deep into Loggins’ storied career and personal evolution, offering fans a heartfelt look at the man behind the music.
The Documentary’s Essence
“Conviction of the Heart” is a 94-minute exploration directed by Dori Berinstein, noted for her work on “Marvin Hamlisch: What He Did For Love.” The title is inspired by Loggins’ 1991 anthem, “Convictions of the Heart,” highlighted by Al Gore as a pivotal environmental song. This documentary presents Loggins narrating the origins of his legendary tracks such as “Footloose” and “Danger Zone” from “Top Gun.” It also chronicles his childhood in California, his significant impact on the folk-rock scene with Loggins & Messina, and his remarkable solo career throughout the 80s, marked by chart-topping songs for blockbuster films.
From Concept to Creation
Prior to a special preview at NewportFILM Outdoors, Loggins and Berinstein discussed the project’s evolution. Berinstein first approached Loggins in 2020, envisioning a Broadway show about music’s transformative power. However, after meeting Loggins, she saw the potential for a documentary. The pandemic shifted her focus, leading to the creation of the film.
A Portrait of a Legend
Using archival footage and interviews with Loggins, his family, and notable figures like Clive Davis and Kevin Bacon, the documentary reveals the singer’s complex persona and collaborations with stars such as Michael Jackson and Stevie Nicks. “I’ve been approached over the years by different wannabe filmmakers,” Loggins shared. “But after I spoke with Dori, I realized it would be fun and great, so I stuck with it.”
The Challenges of Storytelling
Berinstein faced the daunting task of condensing four years of footage into a 94-minute narrative. “I just wish people would go and see eight-hour movies,” she remarked, lamenting moments left on the cutting room floor. Though planned to conclude after the 50th Anniversary Reunion Concert at the Hollywood Bowl, Loggins’ farewell tour announcement in 2023 extended filming, leading to a comprehensive recut.
Reflective Journey
Throughout the film, Loggins reflects candidly on his pursuit of artistic dreams, enduring relevance, and the challenges of fatherhood while touring. “It’s been an interesting foray into the past,” he noted. “I knew that if I wanted to really show up on film, I had to show up for myself in this process. It was sort of like a version of therapy.”
