Julian Schnabel Defends Gadot and Butler Amid Venice Controversy

In a recent controversy surrounding the Venice Film Festival, Julian Schnabel has stood firm against demands from Gaza activists to disinvite stars Gal Gadot and Gerard Butler from the premiere of his latest film, “In the Hand of Dante,” due to their public support for Israel. As tensions rise, the festival serves as a backdrop for a broader conversation about art, politics, and cultural boycotts.

Calls for Boycott at Venice

An open letter, signed by hundreds of international filmmakers and artists, urged the Venice Film Festival organizers to take a strong stand against the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The letter went as far as suggesting the disinvitation of celebrities like Gadot and Butler, who have been vocal in their support for Israel. Although the festival’s chief, Alberto Barbera, confirmed their absence, Schnabel firmly rejected the notion of boycotting artists based on their political views.

Schnabel’s Firm Stance

During the press conference for “In the Hand of Dante,” Schnabel addressed the controversy, stating, “I think there’s no reason to boycott artists. I selected those actors for their merits as actors, and they did an extraordinary job in the film. I think we should talk about the movie, rather than this issue.” Schnabel’s comments emphasize his belief in separating artistic contribution from political affiliations.

A Cinematic Journey Through Time

“In the Hand of Dante,” inspired by Nick Tosches’ book, takes viewers on a literary journey involving a rare manuscript of Dante’s “The Divine Comedy.” The plot weaves through the Vatican library to the streets of New York, drawing parallels to Dante’s own epic narrative. Oscar Isaac, portraying both Tosches and Dante, highlighted the project’s allure, describing it as the pursuit of the “impossible dream” and the excitement of embracing the mysterious.

Stellar Ensemble Cast

The film features an impressive lineup including Jason Momoa, John Malkovich, and Martin Scorsese, who plays a sage named Isaiah influencing Dante. Italian talents such as Sabrina Impacciatore and Franco Nero add authenticity to the film, enriching its cultural and artistic depth.

“In the Hand of Dante” is set to premiere at the Venice Film Festival, drawing attention not only for its star-studded cast and intriguing storyline but also as a focal point in the ongoing dialogue about the intersection of art and politics.
