John Candy's Son Reacts to Painful Revelations on Actor's Weight

John Candy’s legacy continues to captivate audiences, but recent revelations from the documentary “John Candy: I Like Me” have sparked reflection on his treatment by the media. At a recent event promoting the film, Candy’s son, Chris, expressed sorrow and surprise upon discovering interviews where journalists mocked the beloved actor’s weight. Candy, celebrated for his comedic genius, faced challenges that, as the documentary reveals, extended beyond the silver screen.

The Heart-Wrenching Discovery

During an event tied to the release of “John Candy: I Like Me,” Chris Candy conveyed his dismay, describing as “heart-wrenching” the resurfaced clips where journalists openly criticized his father’s weight. “I was kind of shocked to see how interviewers treat him,” Chris shared. The documentary shows how such interviews impacted the actor’s demeanor and possibly contributed to long-standing personal insecurities.

Chris revealed insights about his father’s struggles with public scrutiny, particularly regarding his eating habits. “I learned through the process of this [documentary] that he was so nervous about eating in front of people because of paparazzi,” Chris noted. This pressure led to unhealthy eating patterns, where John would skip meals during the day, only to eat later in the evening.

A Friend and Son’s Perspective

Chris candidly discussed the emotional burden he felt observing his father’s struggles. “When I hear stories like that I just felt so bad for him,” he said. The pressure from the public and media didn’t just affect John Candy but those close to him who wished they could offer support. “You really want in those moments, as his son or as his friend, to be able to grab him by his shoulders and say, ‘Why the [expletive] do you have to do this? Just who cares? Have a sandwich and get mad about it.’”

The Documentary’s Confrontation with the Past

Directed by Colin Hanks and produced by Ryan Reynolds, “John Candy: I Like Me” premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and is now available on Amazon Prime Video. It examines the insensitivity of past press interactions, a fact highlighted by Hanks: “It’s tough to see how uncomfortable John was in almost every clip.”

Reynolds, during a TIFF Q&A, disclosed a personal encounter with one of the journalists who mocked Candy. He chose to reach out instead of using the footage as a means of shaming, offering the journalist a chance to reflect on their actions. “We had such a thoughtful conversation about it,” Reynolds recounted.

A Tribute Featuring Fond Memories

The documentary not only highlights past adversities but also celebrates John Candy’s influence through interviews with his co-stars like Eugene Levy, Martin Short, Dan Aykroyd, and Catherine O’Hara. “John Candy: I Like Me” stands as a poignant reminder of the pressures celebrities face and the enduring affection for Candy’s comedic legacy now streaming on Prime Video.
