Recognition from France
During a special ceremony at the JAFF Market French Night in Yogyakarta, the French Ambassador to Indonesia, Timor-Leste, and ASEAN, Fabien Penone, awarded Nugroho the prestigious decoration. Previously honored as a Chevalier in 2015, this new rank represents one of France’s highest cultural distinctions.
Established in 1957, the Order of Arts and Letters is dedicated to individuals who have made remarkable contributions to culture both in France and internationally. Garin Nugroho’s elevation recognizes his decades-long career, during which he has significantly influenced Indonesian cinema.
Pioneering Indonesian Cinema Internationally
Nugroho’s 1998 film “Daun di Atas Bantal” marked a historic moment as the first Indonesian feature to be selected for the Cannes Film Festival’s Un Certain Regard section. This milestone was pivotal in introducing Indonesian cinema to France and the wider world.
Nugroho’s work continues to resonate with French audiences. For instance, “Memories of My Body” won the Montgolfière d’Or at the Festival des 3 Continents in Nantes in 2018.
