The JAFF Market 2025 has kicked off in Yogyakarta, providing a significant platform for Indonesian cultural leaders to enhance the national film ecosystem and boost international visibility. As the market enters its second edition, it continues to act as a crucial bridge connecting Indonesian filmmaking talent with the global industry. This event is a pivotal opportunity for local filmmakers to gain exposure on a larger stage.
A Promising Start
The second edition of the JAFF Market began with a captivating Hanoman dance performance, setting an auspicious tone. Market Director Linda Gozali, a producer with Magma Entertainment, officially opened the event. “It’s a baby — JAFF is 20 years old, and our market is only in its second edition,” she remarked, highlighting the event’s burgeoning potential. This year has seen substantial growth, with 116 exhibitors, 122 companies, and over 1,400 accreditation badges distributed, compared to the previous year’s 1,000 attendees. Gozali encouraged participants to explore every part of the venue, emphasizing the richness of opportunities available.
Connecting on a Global Scale
Gozali emphasized the JAFF Market’s role as a facilitator for regional and global connections. “JAFF Market exists as a strategic bridge connecting projects, talents, companies, and investors from Indonesia to the regional and even global industry,” she stated. By fostering collaborations and paving new pathways for production and distribution, the market enhances the visibility and reach of Indonesian cinema.
Cultural Leaders on the International Stage
Ahmad Mahendra, Director General of Cultural Development, brought greetings from the Minister of Culture and underscored the market’s importance for international visibility. He described JAFF Market as “a transactional or pitching forum” crucial for enhancing the film ecosystem’s visibility. The Ministry of Culture’s initiatives have supported 85 filmmakers at six international festivals, facilitated numerous accolades, and developed over 1,200 talents who have gained international recognition.
Acknowledging Cultural and Economic Impact
Sultan Baktiar Najamudin, Chair of the Regional Representative Council, framed the JAFF Market within Indonesia’s cultural and economic landscape. Acknowledging recent natural disasters, he drew attention to Indonesia’s rich cinematic backdrop and the market’s role as a reflection of the national film industry’s journey. Najamudin stressed the economic benefits, stating that as the national film industry thrives, regional economies are also boosted. Addressing young filmmakers, he affirmed the vast opportunities awaiting their creativity on the world stage.
The JAFF Market 2025 is held in Yogyakarta from Nov. 29 to Dec. 1, serving as a vital hub for cultural exchange and international collaboration.
