How ‘Zootopia 2’ Animators Crafted New Worlds Through Research

Creating the vibrant and complex new worlds of “Zootopia 2” required an extraordinary level of research and creativity. Building on the success of the original film, the animators immersed themselves in understanding animal behavior, environmental dynamics, and socio-cultural nuances. This dedication to detail allowed them to expand Zootopia’s universe in a way that feels both fresh and authentic, capturing audiences’ imaginations while deepening the narrative.

Expanding on Established Themes

Jared Bush, the writer and director of “Zootopia 2,” alongside Byron Howard, emphasized that the sequel continues the exploration of bias and stereotypes. “We wanted to ensure this story continued those discussions,” he said, focusing on the relationship between the fox and the bunny. Differences can seem daunting, and this core message felt important to expand upon in new settings.

Introducing New Characters and Environments

The sequel brings new characters to life, such as Gary De’Snake, the Lynxley family, and Nibbles Maplestick. New environments like the Marsh Market also appear, home to aquatic mammals and reptiles. The research revealed inherent mammal biases against reptiles, and animators navigated these challenges creatively, such as dressing Gary the snake’s grandmother in Victorian-style accessories instead of traditional clothing.

The snake village reflects an interconnected community, drawing inspiration from Antoni Gaudi’s architecture, enhancing the world-building by showcasing unique design elements that fit the characters’ lifestyles.

Crafting Intentional Villains

Lynxes become pivotal antagonists due to their natural cold weather adaptation and predator instincts, aligning with the film’s thematic needs. Bush noted the lynx’s diet of rabbits, creating a natural tension with Judy, the rabbit protagonist. This choice underlines their opportunistic nature, adding realism to their role as villains.

Navigating New Worlds with Nibbles Maplestick

Nibbles Maplestick, a beaver character, embraces a modern twist as a conspiracy-loving internet star. This character introduces protagonists into new environments, moving them outside their comfort zones. Marsh Market, inspired by Louisiana bayous and Southeast Asian floating markets, offers a setting that contrasts starkly with other Zootopia locales. This area brings together marine mammals, illustrating the socio-economic dynamics that enrich the film’s plot.

The animators’ extensive research ensured that environments like Marsh Market felt organic. By considering animal needs, such as rail-less docks for aquatic entry and gentle architectural curves, they crafted spaces unique to each species’ requirements.

Every Detail Counts

World-building in “Zootopia 2” is an intricate process where every element serves a purpose. “Everything is intentional,” Bush explained. Every feature, down to the wood grain of unseen chairs, is deliberately crafted, showcasing the meticulous effort behind this vibrant animation.
