Hollywood Icons Revitalize Doc 'The Man Who Saves the World'

The world of documentary filmmaking often requires a unique blend of creativity and perseverance, especially when tackling unconventional stories. Gabe Polsky’s latest work, “The Man Who Saves the World?”, exemplifies this. Despite initial setbacks with major streamers, the documentary has found its momentum thanks to the involvement of industry heavyweights Danny McBride, David Gordon Green, and Peter Farrelly. These influencers have stepped in as executive producers to help bring this extraordinary story to a wider audience.

Unique Storyline Faces Initial Pushback

When Gabe Polsky presented “The Man Who Saves the World?” to major streaming platforms, initial reactions were lukewarm. “I made a sizzle and took it to all the usual suspects,” Polsky recalls. “For them, it felt like it was just too far out.” The documentary centers on 75-year-old Patrick McCollum, an eccentric peace activist claiming to be predestined by an ancient prophecy to unite Indigenous tribes in South America to save the Amazon and, ultimately, the planet.

The Eccentric Protagonist

McCollum’s colorful history includes roles as a prison chaplain to infamous figures such as Charles Manson and the Menendez brothers, as well as designing jewelry for British royals. Producer Doug DeLuca introduced Polsky to McCollum in 2023. Despite initial skepticism—”I was like this guy is crazy,” admits Polsky—the filmmaker decided to document McCollum’s journey. “I really had nothing to lose except my time,” he adds.

Star Power Lends Credibility

The film takes a turn when famed conservationist Jane Goodall makes an appearance. “Patrick is one of the most extraordinary and inspirational people I have had the good fortune to know,” Goodall asserts in the film. Her involvement adds weight to the narrative, aligning with the documentary’s mix of humor and urgency. Seeking further support, Polsky enlisted Danny McBride, David Gordon Green, and Peter Farrelly, who were captivated by its unique spirit. “It’s something different,” notes Green, emphasizing their commitment to supporting distinctive voices.

A Second Chance with a Wider Release

Their support paved the way for Area 23a, known for distributing “Fantastic Fungi,” to sign on for a hybrid release. This strategy includes theatrical runs in cities like Portland and Seattle, with an awards-qualifying run in Los Angeles starting October 17. “The documentary is a great journey and it’s hopeful,” says Farrelly, capturing the essence of why they chose to back it.

The unconventional documentary “The Man Who Saves the World?” is now reaching audiences in limited release, starting in New York and expanding to cities such as Chicago and Orlando. It stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and the enduring appeal of hopeful storytelling in the face of environmental challenges.
