Global Film Productions Captivated by Jordan's Incentives and Scenery

Jordan‘s film industry is undergoing a transformative phase, attracting global productions through an enticing rebate program. Leveraging its stunning locations and skilled crews, Jordan is becoming a preferred destination for filmmakers worldwide. The exciting developments in Jordan’s film sector illustrate how strategic incentives can draw international attention, making it a hub for cinematic excellence.

Jordan’s Lucrative Rebate Program

Earlier this year, during the renowned Cannes Film Festival, Jordan’s Royal Film Commission unveiled an enhanced cash rebate program. This new system allows productions to receive up to a 45% return on local expenditures. With an automatic exemption from the Kingdom’s 16% VAT and 10% withholding tax, productions can achieve total savings of up to 56%. This competitive advantage comes as Jordan responds to escalating incentives in both Arab nations and European countries like Greece.

“We have many more projects in the pipeline than anticipated,” stated Bashar Abu-Nuwar, head of production services at the Royal Film Commission. The positive reaction has spurred interest from filmmakers, including those involved in projects like “Atonement,” showcasing Jordan’s promising appeal.

Streamlined Processes and Transparent Guidelines

According to Abu-Nuwar, Jordan’s revised rebate offerings have simplified previously complex negotiations, ensuring transparency and ease for producers. This streamlined approach allows filmmakers to count on the rebate confidently as part of their funding strategy. “With the updated guidelines, audits are simpler, and payment terms are highly supportive,” said Rula Nasser, a leading producer in Jordan.

Nasser emphasized the impact on creative projects, noting that teams are increasingly considering Jordan for story settings, enhancing the kingdom’s visibility on the global stage.

Highlighting Jordan for Jordan

The Royal Film Commission is keen to host productions showcasing Jordan’s unique culture and geography, offering an additional 10% rebate for films meeting specific cultural criteria. While the country has often doubled as other locations, there’s a growing desire to spotlight Jordan itself.

“We are open to any project,” said Abu-Nuwar, emphasizing the dual use of film to boost tourism and enrich Jordan’s image internationally. The success of films like “Once Upon a Time in Gaza” demonstrates Jordan’s ability to represent its cultural narratives effectively, highlighting the region’s cooperative spirit.

A Flourishing Film Industry

Jordan’s appeal extends beyond rebates—its well-regarded local crews and advanced facilities contribute to its rising stature. According to Arab Nasser, Jordan is a “safe haven” with a growing film industry that offers filmmakers top-tier talent at reasonable rates.

Current projects and upcoming festivals further underline Jordan’s cultural contribution. Films such as “Palestine 36” and “Sink” are set to premiere, augmenting Jordan’s international presence. A significant Hollywood feature, scheduled for December, exemplifies American studios’ renewed interest in Jordan.

In a strategic move to support smaller productions, Jordan now offers a 10% advance payment on rebates and collaborates with local banks to provide financing solutions. “Jordan is open and is open to everyone,” Abu-Nuwar asserts, highlighting the kingdom’s inclusive approach to building a sustainable film ecosystem.
