French publishers are making a significant return to the Taiwan Creative Content Festival (TCCF) with the “Shoot The Book” initiative. This effort by the Société civile des éditeurs de langue française (SCELF) reflects a growing synergy between French literature and Asian audiovisual professionals, aiming to promote book-to-screen adaptations and strengthen international collaborations.
Reviving Collaborations at TCCF
The French-language publishers’ association, SCELF, is back in Taipei for the second edition of “Shoot The Book” at TCCF, which is scheduled for November 4-7. Organized with TAICCA (Taiwan Creative Content Agency) and supported by the Institut français and the French Office in Taipei, the initiative seeks to deepen relationships between French publishers and Asian audiovisual experts, spotlighting literary adaptations for the screen.
The initiative’s first showing at last year’s TCCF led to exciting developments, such as the adaptation of the French children’s book “Bob et Marley” by Frédéric Marais. This project is advancing as a Franco-Taiwanese co-production with Go-N Productions and Lusasa Animation on board.
Strengthening Global Connections
In a continuing partnership with TAICCA, SCELF is bringing its publisher members to Taipei to facilitate meetings with audiovisual professionals. This year’s “Shoot The Book” event aims to further solidify connections between European and Asian producers, enhancing the profile of French literary talent and expertise in intellectual property and adaptations.
The pitch session will present seven titles with strong adaptation promise, selected by a panel of audiovisual professionals. The French works include “Agence Perdido” by Victor Dixen and “Flight of the Storks” by Jean Christophe Grangé. Taiwanese selections feature “U.N.D.E.R.: The Jade Corpses” by Tymo Lin and “Fish Eye” by Xerxes.
The Experts Behind the Selection
The jury panel for “Shoot The Book” includes renowned professionals such as Jeyi An from Taiwan’s Eightgeman Co., Ltd., Panu Aree from Thailand’s Neramitnung Film Co., Ltd., and Ileana J. Sung from South Korea’s Mr. Romance. Their insights are instrumental in identifying projects with strong cross-cultural and cinematic potential.
Throughout the festival, b2b meetings will accompany the pitch session, providing a platform for further discussions and potential partnerships.
SCELF’s Legacy and Influence
Established in 1960, SCELF plays a pivotal role in managing and distributing royalties for literary works adapted into different media, including film and radio. A bridge between cultural and creative industries, SCELF supports publishers and authors in the adaptation process while offering training programs for its more than 400 members.
Shoot The Book, launched 12 years ago, facilitates synergies between book publishers and audiovisual sectors, with a presence at prominent events like the Cannes Film Market and Séries Mania. Returning to the Taiwan Creative Content Festival marks another step in fostering international creative exchanges.
