Hong Kong’s cinematic gem, “Four Trails,” is set to captivate audiences in the UK with its upcoming theatrical release. Securing distribution through NGO U.K.-China Film Collab, this documentary will also have the honor of opening the prestigious Odyssey Film Festival in London on September 15. As it continues to build momentum, “Four Trails” showcases a remarkable story of endurance and cultural significance, proving its status as a Hong Kong box office hit.
The Journey of “Four Trails”
“Four Trails,” directed by Robin Lee and produced by Ben Lee, tells the riveting tale of one of Hong Kong’s most demanding adventure challenges. The film has captured the hearts of viewers, amassing nearly HK$11 million ($1.4 million) and becoming the second highest-grossing documentary in Hong Kong’s cinematic history. This success underscores the film’s impact and universal appeal.
The documentary details an ultra-marathon challenge conceived by Andre Blumberg in 2012. Participants must conquer four grueling ultra-distance trails, covering a staggering 298 kilometers with a total elevation gain of 14,500 meters, the equivalent of scaling Mount Everest twice. A remarkable feat of human endurance, this challenge allows runners to be classified as finishers if they complete the course within 60 hours or survivors if done within 72 hours.
A Testament to Endurance
Over its 14-year history, only 104 individuals have completed this monumental event, earning it a reputation as one of the world’s most challenging ultra-marathons. Among its admirers is Hong Kong superstar Chow Yun-fat, who praised the film, declaring, “Every Hong Konger should watch this movie.”
Director Robin Lee has received significant recognition for his work, including the award for best new director and a nomination for best film editing at the 43rd Hong Kong Film Awards. The film also garnered a special award from the Hong Kong Film Directors Guild executive committee and was named a film of merit by the Hong Kong Film Critics Society. It won the audience award at the 21st Hong Kong Asian Film Festival as well.
Global Festival Appearances
“Four Trails” has graced international festivals such as the Shanghai International Film Festival and Far East Film Festival in Italy. Its journey continues with forthcoming appearances at the Golden Horse Film Festival in Taipei and screenings across major cities including Bangkok, Berlin, Kuala Lumpur, Lisbon, Paris, Seoul, and Tokyo.
The documentary is also set for a theatrical release in Singapore and will be the opening feature at the Odyssey Film Festival, highlighting the festival’s theme of “Sports” and its commitment to fostering dialogue between British and Greater China film industries.
Hiu Man Chan, artistic director of Odyssey, expressed enthusiasm, saying, “We are delighted that Robin has accepted our invitation as ‘Four Trails’ is the perfect film with which to open the festival.” The festival will commence on September 15 at the Everyman Cinema, Broadgate, with the initial UK release slated for October 30.
